For the book recs: 1 - 102 - 104!

thank you my dear! I'm starting to smell things again, so it seems that I'm getting better... fingers crossed! Now to the book asks:

1. a book that is close to your heart. There's obviously dozens of them, but I'll stay true to the first two titles that came to my mind and say De Profundis by Oscar Wilde and White Oleander by Janet Fitch.

102: your favourite dark academia read. Mmmh are we referring to books that have dark academia vibes but are, in fact, novels or to academic readings that feel particularly dark? For the first category I'd be at a loss - I mean, the very fact that the Secret History exists is an affront to taste so I'm not counting that one -, so I choose the other one and pick the Greeks and the Irrational by Eric Dodds, probably my favourite academic reading ever.

104: a fluffy, sweet read. I had to think hard about this one because I had to admit that I do not have a taste for the properly fluffy in books. The closest thing that came to my mind was Emma by Jane Austen, because, I mean, beautiful dorks who are in love with each other and in denial about it apart from when they briefly touch hands and immediately stop functioning

11. Something you want to do again next year? So many things! I'd want to go hiking again through the mountain woods of early summer and end up bathing in ice-cold water surrounded by the silence of the trees; to freedive in the Mediterranean, so as to feel the deepest most spiritual quiet while underwater and the most exhilarating joy while gliding towards the surface until you break it and come to life again; I'd want to travel alone once again and discover a new place, speak a foreign language, lose my sense of self a little bit; I'd want to laugh with my friends and hug my family and dance at a concert and be touched by a boy and discover new music and be alive and boy, do I feel privileged to have had all of it this year

21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year? This is a good one! I'd say my house-plants have gotten greener and more luscious; there's something new on the walls (the newspaper cut with respira ya se pasa that I hung when the managing of covid at school was at its most hectic and I felt like I could faint; the one with always look on the bright side of human extinction that I hung at the beginning of summer and is the most me I've been in years); there's more books, for sure; and there's two more plush toys, a Night Fury and a Light Fury that I'm both very fond of and very wary of, as one is wont to be

22. Favorite place you visited this year? Well, if this flu leaves me be I might still go and visit a new exciting place before the year is over, but it's in the hands of the gods, so I'll just stick to what I've seen up to now. And it's already so very difficult to pick just one! Might be Palermo, the most radiant fascinating culturally rich Mediterranean city one could ask for; might be Cap Formentor, tufacean rock and mediterranean scrub and the sun setting in a blaze of heart-wrenching glory over the sea surrounding Mallorca; might be the opening of an underwater cave in Malta; might be home, as you very well know, because our beach made golden by the mistral is the very definition of beauty

End of the Year Asks

fitzjames - if you could be at sea anywhere in the world, where would you choose? The happiest moments of my whole life might have happened while we were sailing in the Aegean Sea, hopping from one Greek island to another, so I might pick something like that: maybe sailing from enchanting Skopelos to wild Kyra Panagia with a gentle wind in our sails and the bluest sea all around. Although, I have to add: the thrill of sailing from Gibraltar to Ceuta with strong favourable wind and dolphins jumping all around us - the feeling of leaving a continent for the other, of being so very close to the ocean - makes for another strong contender.

peglar - have you ever written poetry? I'll come clean and say yes, of course I did, with a big shoutout to my pals Giovanni Pascoli, Francesco Petrarca, and Eugenio Montale for giving me a language to try and express the mess I felt (with the obvious disclaimer that my poetry was bad and theirs is, well, miraculous). However, poetry for me was a direct function of pain: the more unspeakable the pain felt, the more I withdrew from prose and plunged into poetry, which means that now that I don't feel the need to write poetry anymore I do not miss it at all.

7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved. 1) Anything from Hamilton, I would say, but most notably The Room Where It Happened, which I absolutely love now. 2) Blank Space by, of all possible singers, The Taylor Swift. 3) Ava Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins.

11. three favourite songs from movie or TV series soundtrack. 1) Bones by Garrison Starr; Grey’s used it too, but I first got to know it on Queen Sugar and it mesmerized me. 2) I Feel You by Depeche Mode, thanks to that wonderful scene on Sense8. 3) Keep Breathing by Ingrid Michealson, because Grey’s Anatomy has been my emotional education and that song was a big part of it.

4. Movie of the Year: Moonlight, no doubts (I know it is technically a 2016 movie, but it was only distributed here in 2017, so I win). Special mention goes to a little documentary, though: The First Shot, by Chinese Yan Cheng and Italian Federico Francioni, which gave me the lens through which to read a piece of Messy Hair’s life and mine.

21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year? Messy Hair built bookshelves!

23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be? “You’ll live through this winter, so much so that the next one to come won’t even scare you, so hold on, darling: va a escampar”.

Silk Sheets, Lace and Bones. ^^

First of all, and as usual: thank you so much! Picture me virtually hugging you, my dear! As for your questions…

Silk Sheets: any ways you treat or spoil yourself?

They usually revolve around food, music, and tv-shows: on a given evening in which I want to spoil myself I’d pick something fancy to cook, cook it while listening to music slash dancing slash drinking a glass of white wine, and then eat it in front of a nice tv-show; if I’m tired, I’d skip the first two parts and just order some gorgeous take away. Sometimes, though, even small details’ll do the trick: things like, using a coloured cup for my morning coffee, or wearing a cute skirt to school.

Lace: your favorite things to wear?

They tend to change with both season and mood; these days I tend to orbit around a loose, soft, brick-red blouse; a smart, large, black-and-blue pair of trousers; a long green-and-red skirt - meaning that I’ll ideally pick one of these and build an outfit around it. This goes for my week days; the motto for the weekend is “let’s rock anything I don’t feel comfortable with wearing at school”.

Bones: Name one strength and one weakness.

Weakness: procrastination, both with personal, emotional things (which results in me being a rude b*tch sometimes without even wanting to) and with practical chores. Strength: I guess the fact that I tend to be passionate about things? Also that I’m good with words (in my native language that is).

Cutie! :* 146. Was today a good day?Definitely! I was outdoors most of the time, strolling about with my mum in the morning and with a friend in the afternoon. I saw the sunset on the pond, I ate fresh and good food, I started a new book, I did yoga, I gave a lot of hugs. I’m happy. :3
