On this day in 1843 Admiral Thomas returned (hoʻihoʻi) the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom from the British Crown, which was confirmed by Queen Victoria. The flag ceremony, lowering of the British Union Jack and raising of the Hawaiian Flag at what is known today as Thomas Square. On that day King Kamehameha III, on the steps of Kawaihaʻo Church proclaimed "Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono". Later that year on November 28, 1843 England and France recognized the independent state of the Hawaiian Nation as an international equal, the United States would soon follow suit. This day is known as Lā Kūʻokoʻa Independence Day of Hawaiʻi. Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and Lā Kūʻokoʻa are political holidays created in the Hawaiian Kingdom era to remind the people of the independent status of the Hawaii.
