Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea was the first holiday celebrated in the Hawaiian Kingdom by kūpuna in 1843. We will be sharing about our history of Waimānalo too with stops at the Waimānalo Mau A Mau Mural, the fishing villages of Kapua and Kūkui, and of our current issues affecting our community and how we can get involved to address them. Bring your ʻohana! Bring your hae Hawaiʻi! We will be flying them white side up in commemoration of the day. Wear your red shirts or any Hawaiian by Birth, American by Force shirts! If you don't have any you can buy them from Kawai Moku. It'll be a warm breezy day so please bring water and snacks, comfortable shoes to walk the distance and swim clothes to cool off in the refreshing waters of Kaiona. On this day in 1843 Admiral Thomas returned (hoʻihoʻi) the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom from the British Crown, which was confirmed by Queen Victoria. The flag ceremony, lowering of the British Union Jack and raising of the Hawaiian Flag at what is known today as Thomas Square. On that day King Kamehameha III, on the steps of Kawaihaʻo Church proclaimed "Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono". Later that year on November 28, 1843 England and France recognized the independent state of the Hawaiian Nation as an international equal, the United States would soon follow suit. This day is known as Lā Kūʻokoʻa Independence Day of Hawaiʻi. Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and Lā Kūʻokoʻa are political holidays created in the Hawaiian Kingdom era to remind the people of the independent status of the Hawaii. #Repost @iolanipalacehi (@get_repost) ・・・ La Hoihoi Ea! Hawaiian Restoration Day! Today we celebrate the restoration of Hawaiian independence from Britain’s Lord George Paulet. In 1843, Paulet was under the impression that British citizens were undergoing unfair treatment in Hawaii. As a result, he demanded that Kamehameha III hand over all power to him, leaving Hawaii under complete control of Britain. In order to avoid hostilities Kamehameha III complied. News of Paulet’s actions reached the British Admiralty in Chile and in July of 1843, Rt. Lord Admiral Richard of the HMS Dublin, arrived in Honolulu in response. Admiral Thomas requested to speak with Kamehameha III and determined that the complaints by British officers did not warrant a takeover and he ordered that the Hawaiian government be restored to power. A ceremony was held on July 31, 1843 to celebrate this momentous occasion. Following this ceremony, a service was held at Kawaihao Church were Kamehameha III proclaimed “Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono,” often translated as “the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” . . . . #IolaniPalace #HawaiiRoyalty #hawaiimonarchy #hawaii #HawaiianHistory
