Fish’s Embark results came back and I’m honestly surprised! I definitely wasn’t expecting these other breeds but it’s so interesting to see how they’ve come together

He’s also clear of all genetic health issues except a single copy of a variant that causes low normal baseline ALT level but I’m not too worried about that!

Also he has so many close relatives on there I’m astounded! I’d really like to know if any of them were half siblings or what but I’ll probably never know

Is Embark still worth it if you know the breed of your dog? Like for the health testing? Idk it just looks so COOL

I believe I’ve mentioned before that I really don’t know where Zoe comes from, as North Shore Animal League gave me zero information because it was “confidential.” All I know is that she supposedly came from Tennessee, which is completely at odds with her Embark Vet DNA test results of American Village Dog (AKA Potcakes, Satos, street dogs from Latin America, etc.)

Given that Embark Vet is the best of the bunch out of all of the DNA tests on the market right now, I have no reason to doubt them.

Anyway, I always assumed that Zoe (or her mother) was from the Bahamas because I know NSAL sometimes imports street dogs from there and I was curious to see if Embark Vet had any samples from dogs from that area. They didn’t, but they did have samples from two locations in Puerto Rico.

Given Zoe has DNA “that matches purebred dogs, due to a distant common ancestor or a more recent mating between a purebred and a village dog” and how many island dogs often have European genes because of colonization and all, I do kind of wonder if she was imported from Puerto Rico. I do know NSAL often gets dogs from there, the Bahamas, etc. so it is certainly possible. Or maybe a rescue in TN that works with them imported her mom and then when the puppies were 6 weeks (that’s when Zoe was spayed, ugh) they shipped ‘em up to Long Island.

I don’t know for sure, but it’s interesting to speculate. I do wish I had more concrete information though. It’s not cool that NSAL wouldn’t give out more information as to where the dogs are from and where they got them from. That’s not what reputable rescues should do, but that’s a whole ‘nother rant for later.

Bailey’s Embark results are in!

What a mutt! The most interesting part of her Embark test is that she has a half-brother that lives in our town! I think we’re gonna message his owners tonight and see if they’d want to set up a play date. If you’d like to see her results, here’s her Embark link!

I finally caved to Embark’s promos for upgrading Tru’s test to include health results and the results were interesting.

She carries one variant for DM. No other conditions other than that ALT Activity thing that a lot of dogs come back with. 

Her COI was 27%. Here’s the chart so you can see how she stacks up to other shelties. Looking at that other spike, I’m going to guess the litter she was from was not a tight line breeding. 

Other than that, I don’t think there was anything exciting. I had to laugh at the body size section.

Back in April 2016, I signed Zoe up for Darwin’s Dogs/Darwin’s Ark. November 2016 is when Phil and I ordered the Embark Vet DNA kit and January 2017 is when we got the results.

What I thought was interesting was even though she’s 63% unknown (probably due to her American Village Dog heritage?????), Darwin’s Ark and Embark are in agreement with the GSD, Beagle, Border Collie and Siberian Husky.

Darwin’s Ark also found 3.9% Alaskan Malamute, 3.4% Cocker Spaniel, 2.3% Labrador Retriever, 2.2% Chihuahua, and 2.1% Boxer.

Embark also released the relatives finder, and what I think is cool is that most of her relatives are extended family (basically first or second cousins) and almost all of them are GSDs.

I’m toying about asking Embark for a re-run because I do wonder if it would come back 63% American Village Dog, 6.9% GSD, etc. and the results would reflect what Darwin’s Ark found.

But then again, maybe it’d stay the same. IDK.

Either way, I feel like between the two tests, I have a better idea of what’s in her gene pool.
