A concept about Ember and Wade steam child that some have been suggesting is it could explore the conflict how a kid can feel they are not enough as both fire and water element.
If we look at the actual steam, it is still considered water but hot. Now, does that mean the kid will be able to swim? Does that mean the kid can breathe under water? Can the kid cry like the water people? Eat their food?
With fire, the best they could have is the heat. But does they heat useful to make glass. Can they use it to create fire people food? Can they eat the food?
Now you gonna say what about air. While a steam person could have some air abilities, I don't think they will be considered like them. The movie shows that air people can fly and create gust of wind from their mouth. They can phase and create lighting when they get angry. While Ember and Wade kid might be able to fly, it brings the question of whether they can fly as fast as air people. They can't create lighting when they get angry. They wouldn't be able to create gust of wind but a gust of steam, which is hot. Also, if they accidentally phase someone, that person will get burned since steam is hot.
Ember and Wade child can feel conflicted that they can't embrace both water and fire culture to the fullest. They feel they are not water enough and fire enough. Then they try to join air children only to learn they are not like them either.
