Summary:

Though Hannibal had imagined many paths toward winning Will over and awakening his hidden monster, facilitating his recovery from a brutal abduction and hours-long gang rape never once entered his manipulative equations. Mason’s revenge for the impregnation of his sister was exacting, and Hannibal knows Will’s suffering was nothing more than a dig at himself, no matter what Will believes. Nevertheless, the games between he and Will continue, a wound that festers as much as it heals.

Neither of them have earned each other’s trust, but Will has certainly earned his pound of flesh, and Hannibal will see him have it, no matter the personal cost.

(continued from here) @embulalia yes, though especially in season 1 of Hannibal. that early on, at least, the mundane is just as prevalent as the magical surreal horror, which is a staple of Gravity Falls.

I agree, Hannibal definitely runs in a different direction, especially by the start of season 3, when the tone of the show overall takes on even more of a dreamy, unreal, fairytale-like quality that it doesn’t quite begin with (compare the display of Cassie Boyle to Chiyoh’s prisoner, for example). I guess to put it another way: Gravity Falls is a world with, for the most part, equally magical and mundane elements, and it’s consistent in this until Bill jarringly enters reality at the end. Hannibal’s world is fairly mundane with touches of magic at the beginning, but the magical elements steadily ramp up every episode until the world is more magical than mundane. same base concept (magical v mundane), just approached differently.

both series engage with existential concepts, but each with different concepts; visual and conceptual horror are both essential elements of both; both series, too, are about love and family. just approached (radically) differently.

GF is also about mystery and childhood, while Hannibal is also about all kinds of wild shit, but now that I lay it out, they have more similarities and starker differences than I realized. I’m gonna think about this more, since I’m gonna rewatch both soon!
