Detour

This is a westbound Rock Island train detouring on the Union Pacific through Fremont, Nebraska. I believe I was standing at or near North M Street for these shots. Here’s some more information from Mark Amfahr, on Facebook:

Good job pinning down the location just west of Fremont on the UP.  It looks like the photographer was standing along N. Crosby St., just east of the Pierce St. crossing. I agree that the dwarf signal in the photo protects a wrong-main move on UP across the BN crossing. The train is probably UP's train RIF, their symbol for the "Rock Island Forwarder", a run-through connection from RI's train 43 via Co. Bluffs.

This cat seems to know what’s he’s talking about, so I’ll now say I’m near Pierce Street at the time of shooting.

Wait & Meet

The crew on a westbound job on the Baltimore & Ohio in southern Indiana (former Ohio & Mississippi) waits at the west end of Georgia Siding. Not too much later, an eastbound manifest blasts by.

The lead locomotive on the waiting train, number 6900, is the class unit for the road’s GP30s; this locale is just west of Mitchell, Indiana. The doll arm on the signal mast tells us that the signal governs the main, not the siding that holds the westbound waiting train. [There is most likely a dwarf signal for the siding, which we can’t see here.]

The B&O in Southern Indiana—Part Three

This is the third of three posts showing some images I took along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in Southern Indiana back in 1976. This is a line that stretches between Cincinnati and St. Louis; while the line was busy and fast back then, currently it is rarely used, perhaps for local service, at best, wonderful signals covered in rust. Here we will see two trains, both with B&O GP30s on point, originate out of Washington, Indiana, a division point, and head west.

In the first image we see a train with 6973 on the lead. This was taken at the west end of the yard in Washington as the train is getting ready to depart. In the second we have jumped west so we can see the train at speed—two and a half miles west of Wheatland, Indiana, at MP 179.

And now we have three more pictures of our second train out of Washington, this with GP30 number 6915 on the point (built in 1962). First, we see it at a classic set of color position lights, near Wheatland, and then twice more, after we catch up with it, in downtown Vincennes, Indiana.

Birmingham Action

Here are a couple of trains of the Southern Railway in Birmingham, Alabama. The first three images were taken east of downtown, the fourth while the Southern Crescent is making its station stop, and the last has the same train continuing on its way to New Orleans.

The freight is led by one of the most idiosyncratic units—an EMD GP30 with a high short hood. The passenger train is powered by a quartet of E8s; the legacy equipment following (at this time) is still heated by steam generators on these wonderful locomotives.

The B&O in Southern Indiana—Part Two

This is the second of three posts showing some images I took along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in Southern Indiana back in 1976. This is a line that stretches between Cincinnati and St. Louis; while the line was busy back then, currently it is rarely used, perhaps for local service, at best.

The first image in this sequence has our westbound train at Montgomery, Indiana. All of the remaining ones were taken in Washington—which is a division point on the line. We first see the train at 5th Street as it pulls through town. After that we see it from Crosby Street at the west side of town. And in the final two image we see where the first train has backed into the yard alongside a second train, which will head west directly.

The lead unit on this new train, B&O 6973, is an EMD GP30 built in January of 1963. See my previous post for information on the motive power leading the first train. Five images by Richard Koenig; taken March 7th 1976.

Special Move—New Lebanon, Indiana

It looks like a special move is taking place this dreary day in the late-70s. This occurred on the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad between Palestine, Illinois, and New Lebanon, Indiana. I believe these large girders were bound for a nearby power plant but my memory is faulty.

The last shot is through my car windshield, but the wig-wag signal makes it worth the trouble.
