i dunno if this is true (and i don’t want to give him too much credit because he does not deserve it lol) but i kind of wonder if being influenced deeply by hp lovecraft is the reason that cosmic horror often seems so... stifled?
i don’t just mean like relying too heavily on “ooooh spooky tentacles and thing that is conveniently impossible for me to describe” i mean like the fact that it seems to forget that fear is not the only possible response to the unknown. because hp lovecraft was a deeply hateful and fearful person and that absolutely influenced his work. yes i know it is a horror subgenre and thus fear is going to be there but i think there could be a lot more stories dealing with the idea that the alien and unknown is also enticing, beautiful, etc (i think annihilation, especially the novel, does this really well while still being spooky).
also the idea that the fear of the unknown (which in reality is often just... harmful) could be misguided or just straight up wrong would be really interesting to explore! but it seems like authors can get stuck in a thematic rut of “no, strange things have to be deadly/feared/hated” and i don’t like that from both an entertainment standpoint and a practical one
