The thing about Lovecraft's work is that he did write about some genuinely fucked up critters, but he doesn't seem to have had a clear picture of which ones those are. "Dog that inhabits right angles" and "sapient colour" are treated as exactly as mind-bending as, like, "guy who looks like a fish" and "big penguin".
my fanart for markiplier's iron lung! i was blown away by this movie and its immediately become a favorite of mine!
I need all the people who don't understand cosmic horror to SHUT THE FUCK UP
you cannot, CANNOT, expect cosmic horror to be explained to you, you can't expect it to tell you whats going on, the POINT is that you dont fucking know
as soon as you know whats happening- as soon as the lights are turned on, the glinting of something sharp in the darkness will turn from the threat of jagged teeth into a reality of simple broken glass, passive, and safe at distance
this very issue, the fact that people think that a lack of information is a flaw, is what ruined Stranger Things. It went from interesting, and mysterious, to boring, as soon as things were explained.
You can have horror in excruciating detail of course, it's one of the best ways to have horror in general, sometimes knowing is worse than not knowing, especially if there's no consequence. But cosmic horror?? the fear of something incomprehensible?? you shouldn't know, and the not knowing should scare you.
in conclusion, I think Iron Lung was amazing.
Just a thought, Rocky has excellent hearing and can "see" through walls, so he can almost definitely hear everything going on in Grace's body through his thin human skin. Rocky constantly hears Grace's heart, his lungs, his stomach, all constantly shifting his wretched slime from one part of his body to the next.
From his perspective, Grace must be constantly screaming in some primal, unknowable language.
And then Grace says something like "uh oh spaghetti-os" and Rocky realizes none of those noises have any relationship to what he's actually saying.
in honor of the sequel :)
