Art and beer come together to make Quiet Storm. The honey ale is a special collaboration between artist Emeka Ogboh and Gruthaus Brauerei for Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017. Made with lime tree flowers and honey collected from Münster beekeepers, the beer reflects summer in Münster and the fragrant linden trees that line the promenade surrounding the inner city. During fermentation, the beer was influenced by a sound installation comprised of ambient sounds from a bustling market in Lagos, Nigeria, which were composed by Münsterian musician Thomas Bücker. Taste and sound come together to create this special bier-skulptur that is fragrant and complex. Quiet Storm was brewed in Belgium by Brouwerij Anders, and has a notable Belgian flavour.

The nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh (*1977) will be awarded with the Prize of the Böttcherstraße 2016. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, 28 August at 11 am in the Kunsthalle Bremen, the artist and his nominator Johan Holten (Director Kunsthalle Baden-Baden) will be present. Emeka Ogboh participates in the Prize exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen with the installation „The Continental Entrée“ (2015/16). In Emeka Ogboh’s room installation, the sign marked FOOD IS R€ADY represents a complex reference structure on the connections and the consequences of food, culture and migration.

1. What did you do before you became an artist? / Was hast Du gemacht, bevor Du Dich entschieden hast Künstler zu werden?
I freelanced as a graphic/web designer.
/ Ich habe als freiberuflicher Grafik-/Webdesigner gearbeitet.
2. When and why did you decide to dedicate your life to art? / Wann und warum hast Du Dich entschieden sich der Kunst zu widmen?
Things got more serious and prospective with art in the last three years. Prior to that I was also moonlighting as a graphic/web designer, but nowadays I’m working full time as an artist.
/ Die letzten drei Jahre wurde es mit der Kunst ernster und aussichtsreicher. Zwischenzeitlich habe ich auch noch nebenberuflich als Grafik-/Webdesigner gearbeitete, aber heutzutage arbeite ich Vollzeit als Künstler.
3. Which artist or aesthetic movements have influenced you and in what way? / Welcher Künstler oder welche Kunstbewegung haben Dich beeinflusst und auf welche Art und Weise?
Sound art was my entry point into the art scene. I was very much interested in soundscapes and field recording practices pioneered by the likes of Bill Murray Schaffer and Bernie Krause. Their works and research opened my ears to my surroundings, and I learned how to listen to my environment.
/ Klangkunst war mein Eingangspunkt in die Kunstszene. Ich war sehr an Geräuschkulissen und field-recording Methoden interessiert, beispielsweise von Pionieren wie Bill Murray Schaffer und Bernie Krause. Ihre Arbeiten und Forschungen haben meine Ohren für meine Umgebung geöffnet und ich habe gelernt meiner Umgebung zuzuhören.
4. With whom would you like to work together? Where would you like to exhibit? / Mit wem würdest Du gerne mal arbeiten? Wo würdest du gerne mal ausstellen?
There’s a lot of artists on my collaboration list, but I’ll pick Otobong Nkanga. The exhibition can be anywhere, we’ll need a big space though.
/ Meine Liste für potentielle Zusammenarbeiten ist lang, aber ich würde Otobong Nkanga auswählen. Die Ausstellung könnte überall stattfinden, wir bräuchten nur viel Platz.
5. Which material fascinated you and why? / Welches Material fasziniert Dich?
I find sound a captivating medium to work with. Sound’s ability to transport you through space and time, and as a tool for arousing emotions, are some of the things that fascinates me as an artist.
/Ich finde Klang ein fesselndes Medium zum Arbeiten. Die Fähigkeit von Klang dich durch Raum und Zeit zu transportieren und Klang als Werkzeug für aufkommende Emotionen sind nur ein paar Aspekte die mich als Künstler faszinieren.
6. What do you need to be happy? / Was brauchst Du zum Glücklichsein?
Family, friends, good food and music.

7. Which book are you reading currently? / Welches Buch liest Du gerade?
I have about 6 books open at the moment… A brief history of seven killings by Marlon James is amongst the pile. The rest are art/research related books.

‘What’s next?’ is a question that keeps popping up.

Die Gruppenausstellung "Kunstpreis der Böttcherstraße in Bremen 2016" wird vom 23. April bis zum 18. September 2016 in der Kunsthalle präsentiert. Pretty cool sound installation at The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. These are recorded sounds of a market called Balogun Market in Lagos, Nigeria. The artist, Emeka Ogboh, wanted the viewer to experience the market through sound with some visual help using these beautiful enamelware trays that are typically used in the markets to display their goods, and turning them into speakers.
