thursday evening / 6:30pm {chapter 10 - part 4}

the sun was setting and Leila had already made her way home. Emery stuck around just as Luna had asked of her earlier. they face each other at the edge of the street, standing by the town view. 

“don’t fret, Em. you look like a nervous wreck right now,” Luna laughs. Emery plays it off and tries her best to form a smile across her face. “it’s not like i’m leaving for good. i’m just going back to school, you know?” Emery nods. 

“of course. and i’m so happy for you! i really am. it’s just, i don’t know! i’m just gonna miss you.” Emery looks down at the ground while Luna smiles at her sweetly, thinking how pure of a gem Emery is, and how she too will miss her just as much. she’s done a lot for her, in the short time they’ve known each other, and Luna will never, ever forget that. 

“hey, this isn’t a goodbye, you know that, right? i mean, well. i guess it is, but not entirely. i just wanted to tell you that i’m always a phone call away. heck, if you want me to drive down to Windenburg for you, i will. and of course i’ll be at the shop time from time to check on it when i can. you’ve become a great friend to me, Em. there are not enough words to describe how thankful i am that you pranced into my life like this, and i intend to keep you around. so smile! we’ll be in touch, okay?” 

Luna leans in for a hug, and they embrace each other tightly. Emery exhales softly and smiles to herself, feeling just as thankful for Luna. 

sometimes people come into our lives when we least expect it. oftentimes, it’s during the times we need someone the most. that is what these two had done for each other. with Luna on the whim of losing just about everything to Emery feeling lost and alone, needing some guidance. their presence reminded them both that no matter what, they’ll be okay.

thursday afternoon / 1:22pm {chapter 10 - part 3} 

Leila reaches out her hand and Emery shakes it gracefully. “so, you’re going to be my new boss?” Leila’s face drops a little and says, “oh, no, no. please, don’t think of me as that! we’re equals. trust me, it’s gonna feel like we’re not even working!” the three laugh altogether and eventually sit together on the couch, with Luna paving the way so Leila and Emery can get a good working foundation before she permanently leaves the store behind. 

after a couple hours of stuffing their faces with delicious macarons and engaging in enthusiastic conversation, Luna taps Emery’s shoulder and tells her, “hey, i want to share a few words with you before we leave today okay?” 

“okay.” Emery gives her a half-smile and nods. Luna is quick to stir the conversation around and soon has Leila laughing her stomach out. Emery smiles blandly, unable to fully pay attention as she is mentally preparing herself for what Luna may have to say. she knows it’s nothing bad, she just thinks it’s a goodbye speech, and she isn’t sure if she’s ready for that yet.

sunday morning / 8:30am {chapter 8 - part 1}

“i just, um, moved into town and am need of a job. i recently took up gardening, and i’m really interested in it! i would love to work in this kind of environment. your shop is really beautiful, too.” Luna can sense the nervousness in Emery but she didn’t mind, she thought she was cute and was flattered by her admiration and interest in wanting to work here. in the back of her mind though, she wasn’t sure what to think. her shop is in trouble and she can’t even bare to think how she would pay this girl. attempting to push these thoughts further back she asks, “and how old are you, Emery? beautiful name, by the way.”  “i’m 17, and thank you,” she says as she fiddles with her fingers, but continues to flash a smile in an attempt to stay cool and confident. Luna starts to feel a bit bad about having an on-the-spot interview, it seems to have set the poor girl back a bit. but despite her worries, she sees potential. she thinks maybe this is a sign to not give up entirely on this shop and let it go down in shambles. maybe this girl is a shot in the dark, a second chance to make things better, an opportunity to turn things around. after all, the shop needs new inspiration, a fresh and bright, burning soul to liven this place up. Luna’s presence lately must’ve been a damper around here. “well, i’ll tell you what. i like you! i don’t have to ask much to know that you’d be a great addition here. so, you can start tomorrow at 8:00 a.m., you can wear whatever you want but maybe some flat shoes next time! we’ll be on our feet for hours. does that sound good to you?”  Emery’s face lights up in excitement and a big smile appears on her face, “yes! it does, wow! thank you so much! i’ll be here tomorrow morning!” Luna reaches in for a hug. sweet girl, she thought. “all right, i will see you then.”

monday afternoon / 4:03pm {chapter 9 - part 1}

“yeah, that sounds great. come on, lets sit over on the bench near the pond.”

monday afternoon / 4:22pm {chapter 9 - part 2}

“what? really?” Emery’s face fell, shocked at the news.

“yeah… in the back of my mind i was terrified. i couldn’t help myself, i wanted to help you, you were so sweet and i loved the energy you had. but i also thought, fuck, you know? my shop wasn’t doing too good when you came in; i barely made any profit. i had bills past due and it was a mess. my ultimate worry was how in the world could i take another employee and pay them when i barely had anything?” Luna took a deep breath to compose all her thoughts. it seemed like the perfect time to have this conversation with her. “but holy shit, it was like you were a blessing, Em. i never saw someone work so hard, and i could see why now, with you getting shipped off like that; you needed something else to focus on and put 100% too. and i was extremely shocked… the first couple weeks you worked i never saw so many customers come in. i haven’t made big sales in a long time and it was much to your impressive service. in the couple months you’ve been working with me, i was able to make enough profit to catch up on my bills, pay you fairly, and basically prevented my store from closing down completely.

so in the end, i should be thanking you, Emery. you helped me so much. you helped save my shop, m-my beautiful grandmother’s shop.”

monday afternoon / 5:00pm {chapter 9 - part 3}

“your grandmother’s? you mean, this was handed down to you?” Emery’s eyes fill with curiosity. “well, not quite… she had a couple shopkeepers before i ever came into the picture, but they too soon passed, so i thought i’d take this up. but yes, my grandmother owned this shop. she loved gardening. she loved plants and flowers. so she started this up years ago.”

“wow.” "she had such passion for it, you know.” Luna smiles at the thought of her, but it quickly disappears once she remembers she’s gone. “but um, she sadly passed away when i was 10… and welp, much like you, my parents and i didn’t have much of a relationship. after my grandmother passed, who was the one that took care of me, they weren’t really there for me. only to drop off food, money, or hell, since they worked so much, sometimes they’d ask favors of their co-workers or even strangers to care for me. so growing up and going to school, i didn’t have any support and direction.”

“i get it. especially with having their support. i didn’t have my parents’ emotional support, for sure. my mom always wanted me to be someone i’m not. she forced many things onto me and it was just so much. i wanted to be my own person and to freely be myself.” Luna smiles, admiring her individuality. “of course. i know getting shipped off to a totally new place is tough, but i can tell you, it’s for the better. you got a clean slate here. you’re still young, too. that’s something i wish i was able to have, a clean slate. my life has just always been so hectic, full of rash decisions and a lot of emotional turmoil that i ended up always feeling lost and stagnant; doing things because it seemed like i had to or because i honestly didn’t know any better.”

Emery takes a long look at the ground, uncrossing and crossing her legs until she was able voice her response, “well… you’re still pretty young yourself. i know for a fact there is no age limit to starting anew and pursuing what you really want to do in life. maybe it’s just all about meeting the right people to get the ball rolling in our lives, or to kinda help make the light bulb in our heads to turn on, you know?” “yeah… you’re right. i-i definitely believe that.”

Emery continues to fiddle with her feet and says lowly, “right now, i don’t know what i want to do in the future, but i knew back home, it sure as hell wasn’t whatever my mom wanted me to be. but how about you, you mention doing things because you felt obligated to…. was that why you took over your grandmother’s shop? i can’t imagine, and i mean no offense to you or your beloved grandmother, but to me, it seems like you are capable of doing so much more.” she looks away shyly from Luna, hoping that wasn’t too much to say. after all, Luna is older, she doesn’t want to over-step her boundaries.
