Although Emira Maresh is a damn well written and comprehensible character I can’t just not be absolutely pissed at her.

Like it’s so uncomfortable to see someone being such a great mother to one child that she doesn’t even try to be a good mother to two. Like, i could never imagine taking a 5 year old baby under my wing just to regret not raising him as a fricking bodyguard once he’s grown up.💔

Kell paused. “Do you ever feel scared?”

The words hit her like an accusation. Emira took a breath. Kell stared at her, blue eye wide. No, she realized, this was a terrified ten-year-old boy looking for comfort from his mother.

“Everyone does,” Emira said softly, “it’s how you deal with it that matters.” She reached forward and brushed his hair out of his face. “If you let it, fear can rule your life.”

Thinking about if there is Mother’s Day or some variation in Arnes. Cuz really why not? And bb Rhy is very excited to pick out a gift for his mother. The guards and Tieren are taking him out to the market and then he sees Kell isn’t ready. And clearly he demands that Kell comes along, Kell has only been his brother for a few months but Rhy knows that they should pick out a gift together. Or maybe even get her two gifts. And Kell protests a little, but even 5 year old Rhy is a force of nature so obviously he finds himself dragged along on this adventure. And while Emira isn’t his mother, she’s been… kind enough. And it’s pretty fun to do stuff with Rhy. And he likes Tieren so they go.

And because apparently I am in a saccharine mood (rare) it actually all goes really well and they pick Emira out a nice present and she smiles at both of them when they present it to her. And even better she hugs both of them after.

And then (because the aforementioned mood is rare) imagine Rhy finding the gift in his mother’s things, after she dies. Holding it in his hands and remembering. And wondering if Kell noticed the spike of pain wherever he is right now. Maybe he sets the gift on his nightstand before composing himself to go to do kingly things.
