2016 Year-End Reviews: 16 Characters
The Heroines
1. Emma Swan Once Upon A Time
Emma Swan is always growing and with each season, she becomes more of an inspiration than before. Emma’s journey in bringing her True Love home has been heart wrenching on its own, but learning that she’s potentially destined for an early demise took the character places she’d never imagined. Emma’s grown a lot from the reserved, reluctant woman we met in the pilot, but this year she’s explored love with the idea that it may not come home with her. She’s taken on more than she anyone deserves to and she’s revealed just how much it’s hurt her, exhausted her, and broken her. But best of all, when Emma finally found the peace and ability to open her heart in quiet moments, she was struck with the visions that told her an end was near. Emma’s come a long way and while in the past she may have closed her off after learning such news, today she’s doing everything she can to take in the quiet moments. She’s taken initiative to make her life with Killian and Henry as beautifully close as can be. Despite the fear, she’s choosing to live in the now while remaining selflessly devoted to the town. And in doing so, she’s reminding viewers of the importance of spending time with loved ones. She’s reminding viewers of the significance that lies within allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. There’s unparalleled strength in vulnerability and Emma Swan has been the ultimate showcase of that fact for six years now. [x]

2. Jennifer Morrison Once Upon A Time
There is no actress on television right now that can make me cry as easily as Jennifer Morrison. Emma Swan’s life has not been the easiest this year, but it has given Morrison the kind of material she’s played with exceptionally. Morrison never fails to bare it all as Emma — no matter if it’s sadness, pure bliss, or rage, with a full range of emotions she allows us to feel every beat of those feelings. And this year, after a heartbreakingly exhausting year, Emma’s been forced to deal with what could possibly be her end. And while Morrison has often played with a number of emotions, fear one of them, she’s never showcased it as intricately as she has during the first half of season six. Emma’s terrified, and Morrison makes sure we feel that terror even when it’s interwoven amongst quiet, joyful moments. Morrison makes sure we understand just how deeply Emma values her life and position as the Storybrooke Savior — she makes sure the audience understands that this isn’t just a selfish sadness, but a selfless one. Emma’s end means the end for a lot of happy endings, and she can’t bear that thought in any shape or form. [x]

2016 Year-End Reviews: 16 Relationships
2. Emma Swan and Henry Mills Once Upon A Time
The very first relationship that had most of us on Once Upon A Time in tears was the mother/son relationship between Emma and Henry. And as the seasons progressed, their bond grew thicker. And thankfully, this year Once Upon A Time writers decided it was time to revisit the operations we all adored. Henry’s grown into an admirably strong kid, and this year, his optimism and unwavering belief in happy endings served as strength for Emma. When Killian was down in the Underworld, Henry was there to remind Emma of the fact that there’s nothing they can’t accomplish — their family always finds each other. Their operations are always successful. The best part of Emma and Henry’s relationship has always been the fact they’ve believed in one another with a fervency that’s consistently inspired them to rise. And it’s been beautiful to see that exploration result in a conversation that gave Henry the chance to see that for his mother, he’s always been the happy ending she’s needed. [x]

5. Emma tells Henry he’s the real magic in her life. “Street Rats” | Once Upon A Time
As mentioned during our favorite relationships portion of Year-End reviews, Emma’s relationship with her son, Henry has always been a favorite of ours. And this year, this scene is the reason why. This profound, incredibly vulnerable moment where Henry’s reminded of the beautiful impact he’s had on his mother. When Henry states that he believes it’s all his fault that Emma’s doomed to a short life, she reassures him of the fact that because he came into her life, she now has actual magic. He is everything she could’ve wanted and more. He is the real source of magic — the little boy who grew up believing in a happy ending above all. The little boy who helped her believe from day one. And that belief has moved mountains in Emma. It’s lit a fire in her. It’s effortlessly brought her to her destiny and she’d change no part of it because knowing him has been the greatest gift of all.
