A Snippet for every rose I'm sent.
Heather fidgeted with her fork, her lips twisted in a hesitant smile, and a blush spread across her freckled nose. Father had really meant it when he set out to find the most unassuming girl in existence.
Ah, how Emmazel loved a challenge! No companion of hers could say common for long.
“I don’t know anything about my parents,” Heather confessed after half of her slice of cake was gone. “I was left on the blacksmith’s doorstep as a baby and was raised with their children, though they always made sure to remind me that I wasn’t theirs.”
Emmazel clucked her tongue, shaking her head. “You dear thing! Some people have no sense of compassion!”
The girl pulled back and gave a sheepish shrug. “They didn’t have to take me in, but they did.”
“Austere forbid that they leave you to the elements and wildlife! You were a baby!”

“This tower is to keep you safe. I know it feels like a prison, but—”
“Sir E says that there are others like me. Who … who don’t live in towers.” Emmazel choked down a sob before Night could hear it. Lavender. She needed lavender for the potion next.
“And he would know, wouldn’t he?” Night didn’t even try to disguise the bitter edge of his voice. “Emmazel, there are others like you, yes, but none of them are you. You are not safe if you leave this tower. Please, I know it isn’t fair that you must stay here, but you must. I do not trust your Sir E. I don’t think that he is here to be your friend."

The stepmother takes a long, slow breath, even as her heart breaks again within her. She has never cared that another woman bore Ella – she’s her daughter in all but blood. Not a replacement for her two stillborn daughters in her first marriage, but a second chance.
A second chance that she has so clearly failed.

Yathane nodded limply and swallowed. "Wait..." she muttered. "How long?"
"How long were you in that tree?" Ryan surmised. "Oh ... let's see. I think it's been just over a hundred and fifty years. Give or take a few, maybe. I'm sorry."
