Jael: A missing heartlight will bring forth the hollowness, a suffering for which reason dragons are so picky about who they chose to share the heartlight with. Yanni: Yes. I know. Is there a way? Jael: Yes. Retrieve your heart and return home. There is no need to break the bond or abandon your heart. You can relinquish the share. Take it back from the person with whom you shared it with. Yanni: He'd die if did so. My heart is keeping him alive. I don't want him to die. Jael: Aah. Young star, he is very dear to you. Yanni: Yes. They both are. How do I break the heartlight without taking the heart back? I'll come back home if you tell me. Jael: You understand this will only bring you suffering? You'll forever be a dragon with a shattered spirit. A part of you forever lost.  Yanni: Is there a way?

Jael smiles sadly.

Jael: Of course. 

Emory looked at them both, fairly sure he did not like any of this, yet he also felt that it wasn’t in his place to tell them what they could or could not do.

Jael: Break the connection? You will forever feel the loss. It shall never be the same, you understand that, young star?

Yanni: Yes, but it will be for the best. I used my heart to save a dear friend, but he already has a loved one, one that can only love one person, there is no room for me, even if they hold my heart.

Emory looked over at Yanni, not quite daring to look at the other one, at least not directly. Emory: What do they mean will never be the same? You really should just talk to them, you know.. He didn’t like the sound of this at all, and the last thing he wanted for all three of his friends was for them to end up doing something they would all regret. He knew they hadn’t been talking properly after it had happened, it was as if the dynamic between the three had changed. Yanni looked at Emory, they knew that he wasn’t wrong, they would have to talk with them, say goodbye if nothing else. They were not about to ruin the relationship between two of their best friends, just because they loved someone who could never love him back and it wasn’t really that person's fault, they were made that way. They looked at Jael, still keeping their head slightly bowed. 

Yanni: Is there a way?

After the debrief, at Derek and Toshi’s place.

Derek: They said they would come, I trust them too. Toshi: Mmm. I’m just worried about what they will tell us

Derek: Heart feeling? Toshi: Yes.. 

He didn’t get any further as there was a knock on the door, Toshi sitting himself down in the sofa, trying to calm his own heart down. Derek: He’s sitting here, with Ollie, how was the last adventure Yanni: I ehm.. Found home, and a way to break the heartlight. That way, I can go home, and you won’t be linked to me anymore. 

Their eyes rested on Toshi who looked at him surprised, at first of course he could understand the wish to go home, but the feeling the link gave him told him otherwise. 

Toshi: I don’t want that. Yanni: For me to go home? Toshi: Both? Especially to break the heartlight connection.. Emory told me.. 

Emory had called him, telling him what he had heard. He may have told Yanni he wouldn’t, but he also would not let them take this decision without knowing it all, and he had a feeling this was one thing Yanni would not tell them.

Yanni: Ehm… What? Toshi: I don’t want you to break our connection.

Derek walked over to them, watching Toshi, then his eyes looked at Yanni, that feeling that should not be there still there. Feelings his race could not have, feelings towards more than one person.

Yanni: Are you just saying that to keep me here? Toshi: No.

He looked over at Derek, who just stood there looking quite confused, Ollie on the other hand jumped up next to Toshi.

Emory: Regardless of what the answer is here… you are coming back with me, right? To talk to them? Yanni: Yes. I promised to tell them if I found a way. Emory: Good.. cause I am not heading home without you. And you know all too well they would both come after you if you didn’t. 

At least he hoped they still realized that. He knew things were different now with the heart, but the way they had said that both were dear to him, told him more than his friend might have thought. 

Yanni: How do I break it? Jael: You come home, we close the portal, and you never go back. It will sever the connection as you want.  Yanni: I see.

Maybe it was for the best, that when the connection was no longer there that they could go here, where he wouldn’t have to be reminded of it everyday, although they had had a hunch it would be just as bad over here. 

Jael: Remember what I told you though, it will never feel the same, and it will always hurt.

Yanni just nods, knowing they don’t really want to do this, but on the other hand, they don’t want to continue the limbo they are now in. Yanni: Let's go back, I would like to just have this over with. Emory: Fine… They call in an early return, knowing there will be a debrief, and then of course the talk. Emory hopes that the talk will finally make things in their group right.

Half a year later. 

Although Toshi was slowly getting better, things had changed a lot with the team. Yannni worked mostly with another team, both because Derek spent time with Toshi, making sure he was getting fully back to himself, but both him and Toshi knew their friend had another reason as well. After their declaration of feelings for Derek, it had changed their dynamic, and as much as Toshi and Derek tried, they had pulled away. Not wanting to be a bother, not wanting to be in the way, not wanting their feelings to spill over to a still very tired Toshi. 

Emory: You know.. If you were going to be this miserable about it, why give him the heart? Yanni: He is my friend, I love them… what would you want me to do, just let him die?

Emory just shrugged his shoulders, he had been the one from the team that had joined Yanni, as he had a general idea what was bothering him, and like he had said before, he wasn’t blind. As they both stepped through the portal, they tilted their head. Emory: Ehm.. Yanni: It can’t be.. Emory: What? Yanni: This is home.. This is my universe, I can feel it!

Emory just looked at them. They knew the story of how Derek had split into the universe Yanni came from, but they had never found a way to go back, but they apparently just had. The two looked at eachother, Emory finally breaking the silence.

Emory: You told him? Yanni looked surprised at the man now standing next to him, lifting an eyebrow slightly. Emory: I’m not blind Yanni. He smiled putting a hand on their shoulder, both standing there together just listening to the discussion as Derek finally won out on them sending another probe to check the lands, and if it came back as green again, that he would go. Derek: It's green…  They all stared at the live screen, the lush forests that they had walked through coming through clearly. Yanni: There.. That’s… Their voice trailed off as they saw it. On the ground was Toshi, bloodied, clearly in a no good state. John: Go.

Toshi: Wow… Yanni: Yeah.

They all looked around, it was like stepping into a postcard really from some Island somewhere that had never seen human life. They were all standing by the edge off a beach, which seemed to go on forever. They had sent the drone out, but it had reached its travel limit before it found the end of the beach. From what they could tell the planet was half and half, one part had land,with an endless shoreline, then woods, trees and mountains, that they could only assume on the other side met the ocean again. They had noticed the mountains seemed to be volcanic, but they could also see that there weren't really any signs of them being awake in any way.

Derek: So basic recon, and then return here in five hours? Amy: Sounds good.

They split up in two, Amy and Emory heading in one direction, while Yanni joined Derek and Toshi on their side.

Yanni: Taking bets on how many times bumblefoot here will fall in these woods? Toshi: Oh, I am willing to say at least thirty, honestly probably way more. Derek: Oi! You are supposed to be on my side! Toshi: Oh come on, even you know how this will go!
