Learning to Feel
Emotionless x Strong!Operative!Reader
**Slight NSFW warning!**
The sounds of the battle outside pursued through the walls of the truck. Alongside you, many of the other days’ operatives were stationed to control a new set of recruits on the battlefield. This wasn’t your first time on the job. In fact, you were not far from being considered an original and well-known operative.
You had a moment to spare to brace yourself when the truck came to a halt, and the metal door began to ascend. Outside was disastrous—expected, of course, but nonetheless disastrous. The air was full of the scents of gunpowder and screeches of machinery and people.
You felt a sort of tickling sensation on the nape of your neck. Assuming it had just been a hair or bug, but you broke concentration as it continued to pursue, and you subtly glanced over to your right.
Your heart dropped when you noticed the condescending glare of Emotionless. He quickly pulled his hand away from the collar of your (f/c) suit. You gulped before shouting above the sounds of battle, "Yeah?"
His gaze flickered to the floor and then back to yours. Although his mouth was basically a flat-line, his eyes contrasted that with something comparable to embarrassment. He coughed, slowly turning his head to face forward again after a few long seconds of the shared eye contact. He muttered above the noise, "Focus on the mission."
You felt irritation prick at your spine, "What? But you were the one to-"
Dreadful, who had been on your left, tugged your arm to interrupt your quip to your senior operative, and motioned with his head to the outside, and you followed him outside.
The rest of the morning followed as planned, directing new recruits and reminding them of operations. It wasn't too bad, and nothing you weren't used to already. However, throughout the day you found it rather hard to pull your thoughts from the interaction with Emotionless.
And it seemed that that had just been the start of it all.
Just a few days later, you were relaxing on the couch in your residence one afternoon. But over the course of an hour you realized Emotionless walking by your residence. Of course, it made you cringe remembering the awkward interaction you had with him on the day of your last mission. However, it seemed he continued to pass by...again...and a few times more.
It was off. It wasn't like he was looking in your window or anything- you even checked the operatives' schedule for the week and realized that he was not put on the day patrol at all. You only narrowed your eyes and drew the curtains shut, returning to your spot on the couch with a huff.
You pulled your tablet back into your lap, swiping through the schedules to remind yourself of your next station-
Zzzt.
You rolled your eyes, grunting as you pulled yourself up again to trudge to your door. It was midday, and you weren't scheduled till tonight and it wasn't like you had anything planned.
Depressing a button on the left side of your door, you stood back to allow the mechanisms of the door to give way to whomever rang your doorbell.
Your heart dropped.
Emotionless looked down at you with a flat line pressed to his lips. He gave you that all-too-well-known blank stare. You inwardly screamed.
"Emotionless, what do you want?" You asked, somewhat irritated and tiredly. Usually, the only reason Emotionless would appear at your door was to surprise you with an extra patrol shift, or an escort down to the lab. Sure, you could always say no, but you found him almost endearing in a way. You couldn't ever turn down a request from him, no matter how tired you were.
It was an exception today, however, even if there was tension between the two of you. After he cleared his throat, he casted his gaze to the side and he spoke, "I have a request."
"No, Emotionless," You exhaled tiredly, "I am too exhausted today."
He looked down at you, almost surprised, and shook his head, "No, I wasn't going to ask that. I wanted to come inside."
You cocked an eyebrow up at the green operative. Come inside? Really? Of all people, you surely didn't expect to have him as a houseguest.
You coughed awkwardly and shuffled to the side, gesturing to him to come inside at which he obliged. He looked around your residence for a bit, and you were still on edge as he had been holding his rifle tight-up against his chest for the entirety of the interaction.
You awkwardly pointed to it, "You can, um, put that away."
Emotionless glanced down, and hummed as he complied, slipping the gun back into its leather holster(one that all operatives had). He took a seat on your couch, sitting perfectly upright.
He almost looks nervous, you thought to yourself.
"I want to ask you something. What did you do?" He gave you that stern glare, one that he usually used when he disapproves of something.
You glanced to the side, "What?"
"What have you been doing to me?" He got up and paced toward you keeping his ice-cold gaze trained on you. You gulped.
You cocked your head to the side, "I literally have no idea what you're talking about-"
Just then, his face erupted into a hue of green and he backed off. It was surreal, he looked embarrassed or somewhat flustered.
Definitely not the first emotion you'd expect from him.
"Quit doing that thing- what you're doing. You've been making me feel really weird," he went on rambling as you stood by the window in shock, "and whenever I walk past your residence, I get this weird feeling, in here." He ended his mini rant by turning halfway to you, and grabbing his chest.
It sure didn't take long for you to figure out what he was trying to explain. And you quickly turned to face out the window, fanning yourself. It was hard not to burst into a fit of happy giggles.
Even when you had just been a civilian, you found Emotionless endearing. Upon joining the operative force, that only continued as he played the role of "commander" to you.
You shuffled awkwardly over to him, "Uhm, would you mind if I tried something?" He flinched when your hand met his shoulder.
He spoke slowly, "Uh, okay..."
It was then you took a brief moment to appreciate the strong, yet silkiness of his voice. It had a sort-of high twang to it, yet still being quite low. His voice made him seem smart, in a way.
You sucked in a breath, quickly reaching up to pull his plaid beret over his eyes, and he nearly had enough time to retaliate, and froze when you mashed your lips onto his.
First, he tensed up. You shut your eyes tight to brace however he was going to react, but you peered at him when you realized he allowed you to continue, letting out a slight "mmh" in that lovely voice of his.
You felt his hands snake around you, and slight fumbling. You peered once again and saw that he had removed his gloves. You pulled away, panting slightly while you grasp at his green vest.
“How–“ you stopped to pant slightly, “Did you feel?”
His eyes, which had been glazed over and held somewhat of a glow in them, blinked for a moment as he said, “Funny. It’s hot, yet I still do not want you to get off of me.”
You glanced slightly down; it was definitely not something you’d ever imagine yourself doing(even to Emotionless, nonetheless). Even so, you huffed when you dipped down to bury your face in his neck. He didn’t tense up this time, and instead sighed.
“It feels funny,” He trembled a bit beneath you, “What does it mean?”
You tried to understand what he meant by that. There was one meaning– and it had you flushing but the more sweet meaning had you intrigued, “do you mean…” you stopped to cough and look away, “or perhaps we’re thinking of love.”
He took a moment to process that, and he glanced down slightly. He had a moment of panic and when you started to follow his gaze, he grabbed your chin and urged your head up.
“Don’t.” He said flatly. It clicked in your head quickly and you chuckled a bit, without complaint.
“We’ll just say it’s both, then.” You smiled down at him. And he nodded slightly, trying to muster a smile but gave up and looked to the side instead. You urged him forward again, opting to engage more for the rest of the night.
He was confused as hell, but at least he was learning the right way. And, you wouldn’t have to take the night patrol.
"so you feel nothing?" you sneered in question, your nose flared, arms crossed as you glared at Emotionless.
Emotionless only rose his eyebrows, his gaze flickering to the door and back at your frustrated expression.
"Yup." Even his tone was dull and neutral.
Your palms curled into fists as you stomped your foot, tears escaping your face and wetting your cheeks, dripping onto the peeling wooden floor.
"you don't feel, anything? after what happened, after the huge argument with Unstable, you didn't stand up for me?" You asked, spitting every word, saliva getting onto his face.
He stepped back, wiping it off in off swift action as he stared at you. The howling of wind banged onto the fragile windows and rustled the leaves. Both stood your ground, not saying a word, your tears still spilling from your eyes.
"Why cry? I did nothing, save those tears for Unstable?" Emotionless blinked, eyeing you up and down.
You feel a tingle of disgust crawl up your spine, as you rubbed your blood shot eyes, your breath shaky as you breathed out heavy and wheezy.
"i.... don't... i don't know." you answered softly, turning on your heel.
"I just.. I just thought that would make you change your mind, come to me, hold me. Say that your sorry for not standing up for me."
Emotionless blinked not saying a word, unknown to you his eyes twitched for a seconded.
You sighed, not getting an answer from him, turning a heel and leaving his house, the rain instantly hitting your face and soaking your clothes, you didn't care.
"Goodnight Emotionless."
"Goodnight."
And like that the door closed and you stumbled to your car, driving off.
