Writing Process

Is there a snack you like to eat while writing?
Absolutely not. Snacks are for TV time. (Plus I can’t really type with my hands full)
What time of day do you usually write?
Depends. It’s pretty standard for me to get writing done in the morning, and then after that, all bets are off.
Where do you write?
So, my favorite place to write is on the bus. It’s an hour commute to my internship, so I spend the time writing (well, kind of scribbling between my poor handwriting and the shaking of the bus). Later I’ll go back and type up what I’ve written, usually at home on my bed.
How often do you write a new novel fic?
Whenever I ride the bus. Which is for sure three days a week. I TRY to write every day, but depression, man. It sucks the life out of you.
Do you listen to music while you write?
Yup! After years of drowning out obnoxiously loud roommates, music works like a charm. My favorite playlist is my movie scores, but really I can write to just about anything.
What’s your writing utensil? Paper or laptop?
Both. For my long-term fic I write my first draft on paper and then edit on the computer. I’ve found I’m more likely to be motivated when I’m on paper, though. (Less distractions. Plus I can’t see all the writers who are clearly better than me)
Do you have a special pre-writing ritual?
Walk to the bus station haha.
What do you do to get into the writing mood?
Comedy helps, largely because it motivates me to practice so I too may write good comedy. And pump up music. Can’t disregard the power of a good pump-up song.
What do you always have near the place you write?
Headphones.
Do you have a reward system for word counts?
Depends on the fic. I have one in the works where I can’t publish a new chapter until it’s reached a certain word count. And another where I’m probably gonna try to commission someone to do some art because I reached a nice count.
Is there anything else about your writing process your readers don’t know?
I can’t help but visualize it like a movie. A good portion of my recent writing training has been in scripts. And I did really well with that because scripts don’t ask you to include details. I am SO BAD at details. So I try to picture my work like TV scenes: what would the actors be doing in between dialogue? How do I set the scene? What details are necessary for my production designer?
