Emperor Rat !

This is a small piece done last year (2022) of the critically endangered Emperor Rat, which lives in the Solomon Islands. Only three of the species were ever officially recorded, and it may be extinct already.

I love rats so much! I'd like to imagine that this species of rat is still out there, just hiding and waiting to make its triumphant return to the public eye. Maybe he's just putting the finishing touches on an elaborate outfit he's making, one that he'll wear to his own personal coronation. This species is very similar to the King Rat, who also lives in the same area- maybe they're locked in a battle for the throne of the island? He is sewing himself a crown- perhaps a premature victory celebration? We'll have to ask him next time he makes a public appearance, however we might be waiting quite a while...

There's lots of hidden details in this piece! The palm tree in the background is a species of palm also found on the Solomon Islands, although I forget the specific scientific name. The picture frame on the wall is of a bat also found on the island- I'd like to imagine she's a travelling actress, a friend, and maybe an old flame of Mr.Rat. (He's a big fan of the theater, and makes costumes sometimes.) She's signed the photo for him, like an old Hollywood glamour shot. The poster peeling from the wall is of a military peace monument on the island, specifically the Japanese Guadalcanal Memorial, honoring the soldiers who died in WWII. Maybe it has special meaning to Mr.Rat, or maybe he just needed to cover a hole in his wallpaper. Lastly- the gaudy necklace hanging off his mirror is the necklace Q wore in his judge get-up in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The mirror itself holds no reflection of our friend Mr.Rat, as no pictures were ever recorded of this species. I based him off of other rat species on the island, as well as giant rats in general, but no one can say for sure what this species looks like exactly. We'll just have to wait and see!

This piece was done traditionally, with water colors my friend gave me, black graphite, and a touch of white ink. It was a lot of fun to make!

I rly miss Defalt

It’s the middle of the night and neither of us have yet found sleep, the Emperor Rat and I. Beyond the veil the room flickers with a harsh glow from the rat yet my jackals sleep peacefully in curled piles around me, and simultaneously the physical portion of the room is only darkness and the steady beat of the fan.

“Would you like to join me under the covers?” I ask to the rat, the rat who is alone and cold in their own mind. And as they look at me their form glitches furiously in their thoughts and we stare and stare for an eternity before the rat replies:

“Yes.”

I lift the energetic portion of the blanket and they press into my arms against the lonely eyes of their dreams. There is a sense of vulnerability at their touch but they do not take when their claws dig into me, they only allow my energy to flow around them without breaching the inner privacy of my system.

They do not sleep, but neither do I and we are together beneath the white noise of the fan.
