Today we celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon the Unmercenary Healer. Saint Panteleimon was born to a pagan father and Christian mother. His mother died while he was still young but was successful in instilling in her son many of the virtues. His father saw to his education where he became a doctor in medicine, one of the finest in all the surrounding area. He soon accepted the Christian faith after conversing with a priest named Hermolaos on his way to the emperor's palace (whom he served as a physician). Having been baptised, he healed multitudes with his prayer and no medicines, accepting no money in return, thus earning him the title of Unmercenary. When the other physicians of the area began losing customers, they dob informed the emperor Maximian that Panteleimon was now a Christian. Because they were close friends, Maximian did not want to torture Panteleimon straight away and so agreed to have a paralysed man enter whom the pagan doctors would try to heal and then Panteleimon. Successfully healing the paralytic, Panteleimon was subject to many tortures out of the emperor's rage against his conversion. Eventually, the Saint was beheaded, having converted thousands through his example of a noble martyr.
