Empty Markets - “Rash Decision”, Hotel Vegas, 8 September. Video shot by Ángel Delgado-Reyes
This one has been sitting around awhile, although at this point pretty much everything has, which is a shame since it’s a pretty fantastic record…however sadly my job has decided to try and work me to death so my will to even put words to music has been pretty minimal lately. Empty Markets have managed to be a bit therapeutic during this period with a record that spits plenty of venom at pretty much anyone and everything around it, which is pretty much in the realm of what I need often. The band puts together a rather cool blend of hardcore/punk and some dirty/sweaty garage-rock that comes off in a thick muffled mix that actually works really well. The bass dominates here with some buzzsaw type guitar ripping in the background while Drew Schmitz’s vocals somehow miraculously still come out on top of everything. While Stainless Steel presents itself as a ferociously paced garage-punk record, there is actually a level of catchiness here that gives it even further appeal. While plenty have probably already latched on to this one, those who haven’t would do well in finally giving Stainless Steel a listen. Empty Markets – Pink and Barren World (stream) BUY IT!
