you are in ottawa, bro. and then on top of that, you come in all fucking blacked out, cut-offs, pipes, glasses, looking like the terminator. looking like the sperminator, dude. he went full sperminator, and then waltzed through the airport. people were probably fucking getting off the whole way, the whole way through baggage claim. you've gotta be kidding me no one recognized you. there's no one left alive back there.
straight men about shane: if anything happens to him ill kill everyone in this room and then myself
straight men about ilya: ad libbed platonic fantasies of ilya being one of the homies randomly interspersed with the most graphic self insert fanfiction youve ever seen
"That was so utterly beautiful, and my hope and dream and message for every closeted person is that you find the strength and confidence to step out of the closet, and when you step out of the closet you walk into the cottage. That is what I want for every single person who is closeted and that's what we can all try to make sure is waiting for you."
-Dan Powers, Empty Netters podcast, live reaction Heated Rivalry 1x06 The Cottage
As he publicly praised 'Heated Rivalry,' one 'Empty Netters' host privately trashed the show. Outsports has seen the texts.
i think i speak for the choir here when i say disappointed but not surprised. i always saw their reviews as a fairly shallow grift, but i didn’t mind the grift if it also meant a very public show of support from people in the hockey-sphere, which could have a positive influence over their strictly hockey listeners/viewers. the sheer difference between their public and private words though speaks to why people are so paranoid about acceptance. people are criticized for being too on edge/digging too much into people’s acceptance and whether they really are allies, but how can you not when you have people blatantly lying about stuff like this
edit: adding these tags from @starrynet
i definitely agree and i think it’s probably the most frustrating part. i think no hockey fan is going to be surprised by this situation but non-hockey heated rivalry fans very much will be. there’s a lot of talk about “heated rivalry’s impact” but very little understanding that the degree of conservatism seen in this situation is not an outlier but absolutely the norm in hockey. to put it simply, a smutty hockey romance tv show’s mainstream success does not make the real-life players born into families that aren’t conservative, it does not make anti-individualism and conformity less valued in hockey, it does not rid peewee hockey locker rooms of homophobic language. it has a hopeful message for the people who watch it, but brock mcgillis and zach sullivan are right, a tv show portraying a beautiful fantasy of how things could be doesn’t make it so, and straight players either aren’t watching or are treating it as a joke.
further update: empty netter’s video with the texts in the context of the original text conversation. personally, none of this new information changes the context of the original messages to me, but it might if you understood the original texts differently than i did.
interestingly people seem to think this is a text conversation with dj bean from what chaos based on the texts, though empty netters don't say anything about it...considering cyd ziegler's reputation literally everyone involved in this situation is incredibly shady...
chris powers, i have grown quite fond of you
EDIT: NO LONGER FOND. not apologizing for their comments on women being pucksluts and checking off inclusivity boxes for the blue haired liberals on twitter, and instead "apologizing" for going into the show not liking it (a non-issue, straight men watched media so good that it changed their minds is great, i am not at all upset abt those comments at all) is not okay. disappointing.
they are everything to me. dan trying to remain positive. chris raging out. sean needing to flee. top 10 moments of the year.
Truly was not expecting that watching those three hockey bros live reacting to Ep 6 would fill me with so much euphoria they were so HYPED they were so HOOKED they cried multiple times and had to get up and go for a walk, like all my quibbles about the episode are gone I am a being of joy because -checks notes- hockey man in the middle is jumping on his couch because they touched toes
