If I had a nickel for every time a British character referred to as “Monty” in a comedy musical set in the 20th century gave me some of the most Intense gender envy I’ve ever experienced and made me want to be a musical theatre performer I would have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

If there's something wrong™ with you (affectionate) like with me and you use parts of The Sink: A Sleep Aid as an actual sleep aid because Tash's voice is comforting, I cut together the monologues about the serial killer's cat's ashes date, the sherbet sapphic awakening, and the failed murder-suicide by immolation into a file, so I didn't have to keep switching between episodes and having to keep reversing the audio when trying to pass out. At least once a day I think about the rich gay couple who sat to the left of me who were complaining that the show was too cheap to print the photos of the ensemble (completely unaware it was a five-person show and of what the show was about) and the rich straight elderly couple to my right who had no idea what they were walking into (and were pretty sure it was a drama based on the Colin Firth film they enjoyed) when I was in the front row in full Monty cosplay and they all became both confused and concerned at my audible sobbing during ‘Dead in the Water’ while I was having a religious experience at the theatre seeing Mince live for the first time. Wherever they are, I hope they are well.

‘Tis a mixture of Dave Malloy musicals being one of my go to music to work to (frfr we’ve been looping Octet these past few ways while reading performance theory) / the imposter syndrome that comes with having gifted kid burn out in a PhD program at an elite university / most of my D&D and larp characters being processing tools so ‘Starchild’ heavily resonating with them /Brittain’s voice and the song just being so beautiful and ache-inducing

Few things understand the struggle of being in academia than being infected with disbelief and blasphemy and trying to convince yourself that you will transcend, vomit this loser out of yourself and become the next big thing. (Unrelated but if I had a nickel for every time there was a musical theatre song about purpose that discusses self-immolation I would have two nickels (‘Starchild’ and ‘Finale’ from Pippin) which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice)

There really isn’t anyone doing it like Dave Malloy for the existential dread over lost potential and purpose girlies (gender neutral)
