For now, the day was quiet. It didn’t happen often, but in those rare moments of peace, you and Merlin chose to spend them together, in near silence, just basking in each other’s company. You lay on top of your partner, hands folded beneath your chin as you looked down at Merlin, whose eyes were firmly closed. “You’re staring.” He said simply, though he couldn’t see you. “I am.” You confirmed, entirely shameless. Why should there be any shame in wanting to stare at your partner. “I’m not doing anything.” He protested. “You’re not.” You said, just to irritate him. “Then why are you staring?” He asked, reluctantly opening his eyes to look at you himself. “Why do you stare at Arthur?” You questioned with a small smirk, your frequent trump card in little nothing-spats you had. Merlin, familiar with this, groaned. You watched as his eyes lit up bright gold, realising too slowly that was probably a bad sign for you, and promptly got hit in the side of your head with a pillow.
You yelped and rolled off the side of the bed, retreating from what could be further attacks. From your spot on the ground, you looked up at the bed to find Merlin laughing, and were temporarily enraptured by his beauty. When Merlin turned to look down at you a moment later, he was also struck, both of you frozen for only a moment admiring each other. You were wearing one of his shirts, it was oversized on him, and in it you looked nothing short of mind blowing. He loved you in his clothes.
You broke from your trance first, and took the pillow that had been thrown at you as your weapon, and launched it back at Merlin. He was stunned for only a second before he scrambled to stand and follow you, in only his underwear, and you were distracted almost immediately. Merlin paused and raised a disappointed brow at you, to which you just winked, and then took off at a run. There wasn’t much space in his quarters to run, but you made it work, ducking and weaving around things better than Merlin could on his own. You spun on your heel to attempt to duck past and confuse him, which meant you saw the exact moment his eyes glowed golden once again, and his magic guided you firmly into his arms.
Merlin’s eyes were stunning normally, you loved to just look at him and study him, his eyes most of all - but when he used his magic? They were just radiant. You were the palace’s royal painter, it was how the two of you had met, and so you couldn’t help but look at him and see shades of paint, strokes of your brush, smudges of charcoals. You’d drawn Merlin more times than you could count, and you were sure you’d continue to be captured by him as your muse until the day that you died.
You pressed your forehead against his, and laughed, softer than before. Merlin was quickly taken in by your softness and fell into a gentle moment with you. Slowly, Merlin began to sway, just slightly, and when you realised this you began to hum along, the two of you gently swaying around the space together as if dancing, leading you both back to the bed.
As you leaned in to press your lips to his, Arthur’s voice boomed out behind his door. “Merlin!” He demanded loudly, slamming open the door. You sighed, dropping your head down to rest against Merlin’s neck, while your lover turned a glare on the prince. “Yes, your highness?” He asked, thumb absently tracing over your hip. Arthur knew about the two of you, of course he did, but seeing the two of you always caught him off guard. Like he hadn’t fully conceptualised that the two of you existed when he wasn’t there. “Oh uhm, we- the knights and I are going for a patrol through the forest and Gaius mentioned there was something he needed you to pick up, so you should come with us.” He explained, and Merlin nodded with a sigh. “Alright. I’ll get ready.” Arthur hesitated for a moment, hand waving as if he wasn’t sure what to do with it.
You looked up at the prince with a small smile. “Hello, your highness.” You greeted, and he paused, once again caught off guard by you speaking, though he caught up again faster this time. “Hello. Having.. a good morning?” He asked, but Merlin responded before you could. “We were, until you got here, yes.” You tipped your head back and laughed as Arthur spluttered, then scolded Merlin, who waved him off as he finally released you to find some clothes to wear.
“I’ll see you both when you return.” You said as you waved the two men off with a grin, wiggling your eyebrows at Merlin when Arthur wasn’t looking. He’d get you for that later, and you looked forward to it.
