Things I love about the dynamic between Emily and the Outsider
1. Deep down, there’s an adventurer in Emily’s heart. A wild and untamable curiosity that instills her with both courage and an open mind.
2. He grounds her. He can fill Emily with all the dreams in the world, satiating that undying need to explore within her, but he wouldn’t consume her. He’d keep it real, controlled. He’d remind her of her duties and the importance they bear. He’d want her to not only be the happiest she can be, but also the best.
3. She’s not afraid of him. The void has given her nightmares before, but Emily isn’t one to cower. She faces the Outsider head on, her curious nature a driving force to make her want to get to know him more, better — opposed to running away from his presence instead.
4. She humanizes him. Living in the void for over 4000 years can leave you out of touch with your humanity. But Emily challenges him to think, to feel. She’s not afraid. She’ll fight him if she has to. She’ll dare him to express himself, seduce him into giving in. She’s fire to his ice, and she’ll make him melt if she has to.
5. Her imagination allows her to emphathise with him easier. Living out of society for so long is one thing, but stemming from a different day and age is another. Things the Outsider experienced and saw during his human life are ungraspable to most, but Emily loves to fill in the blanks and imagine a world far different from her own.
6. They care for each other. The Outsider has been shown to care for Emily’s fate, more so than anyone else’s. Emily is driven by love. Love for many things. She’d come to care for him without her even realising it, it’s in her nature to do so. They’d find a hard time expressing these feelings for each other, the complicated nature of their relationship keeping them from giving in, but they’d show it — through small gestures and actions. It’s the things we do that often transcend words and it’s their ability to do and act that allows them to connect.
I got asked what the Outsider is wearing in Waste, and here’s the answer. Yes those are his original ‘Prada’ boots, I wouldn’t dare take them away.
Dunwall power couple.
