Empty. He tears the nightmare out.

Get it out! Stop it! Get it out!

‘No.’

Clawing off his robes, He is frantic.

But there’s something gnawing at those daydreams in me! Crawling in my belly on its hands and feet... I can see it when I slumber. I can see it in the lake!

Please, don’t you? He breathes, tears welling. Tell me, tell me that you do, too.

‘No.’ The moon. ‘There’s little. There’s nothing.’

You... Liar.

He writhes, silk leaving him in neat folds. You deceiver. He sees that reflection in the water, hair dark and gaze all a-slumber, and who’s this man with his eyes and that mouth full of poems? Who’s that man warm like summer? Who’s this man with my face?

Liars. His fingers rake at his belly, and--

Bastards!

You would abandon me? Here?! Alone?! No, no, no -- Tell me what I’ve done!

Silence.

'There's nothing to say.

There’s nothing you’ve done.’

He peels, howling. Fear settles anchor-like in his gut, wasp a-whir and wilding, and his breaths chug, chug, incinerate his lungs. It burns. He endures, possessed. He tears flesh with haste, skimming clumps of clotted dark night-terrors oozed and sticky like syrup. I have to, He reasons. You’re like nightmare where my blood froths. You’re like an illness to get rid of. You’re like a demon in my skin.

Out. This nightmare. This possessor... I have to tear, rip, burrow you out!

He must.

He whimpers, nails plunging for his insides.

It pops past, squelching. His belly sucks him in.

It hurts, but this controlled hurt? That sweet-sharp burn? It is healing, He’d once heard before.  

His blood drops, water turned dark like slaughter for it.

‘Tick, tock,’ it plummets. ‘One second. Four.’

Four.

‘And my dear boy, how many of them have you got? How many seconds until it’s only him again, do you think?’

Panic.

‘How many?’

He startles.

‘Till the sun?’

Yes. Squelching, his nails forage deeper. Sunrise, yes! He wails beastly, chunks sloughing damp and dripping down his wrist, and it is macabre. Grotesque. Terrible. He digs with madness, scooping nightmare clumps at a feverish tempo. He erupts a belly full of rubies and a stomach burst with garnets. He takes it down to his wristbone until he drips, drips, drips.

Hemorrhages. His insides thump into the water, heavy, but that reflection never, ever quite leaves.

He's terrified, the rippling like a night-terror cackle.

Sun tickles at the canopies, and He scoops as he howls.

Liver.

Kidney.  

‘Do you think you dug fast enough?’

The sun takes the canopies, and He fades back to dark.

Oops.

He sinks into the water.

‘I guess not.'

He's not himself anymore.
