That post about magic earring Ken is totally incorrect lol. There's like 5 matching barbies in that line too. Lemme find a link for you where doll collectors totally break that post down.

I figured the post was wrong about there being only Ken in the line (obviously there was a set, there’s always a set with Barbie) and they all came with a clip-on earring for the kid. But the post was right about marketing doing surveys on what was considered “cool” because it’s a common tactic of commercial appropriation; you go in and see what is trending and then you put it in mainstream commercialism (they still do this for urban culture so it’s not that surprising). So yeah the part about Ken being the only Earring Magic doll is false.

However, it really is Mattel’s best-selling Ken doll and a lot of gay folks bought the doll because of how gay it obviously looked. The reason we know that it was pulled because of how gay it is is because of people like Dan Savage (gross) at the time publicly criticizing the obvious gay stereotyping of lavender clothing (lavender has always been associated with homosexuality since the 50s due to the lavender scare) and use of a common gay 90′s symbol (the cock-ring) that was used as a coded sexuality identifier.  Mattel freaked because they accidentally used a sex toy on one of their dolls and pulled it. So the majority of the post is probably true on that front. Not sure if parents knew what was up but Mattel sure as hell did after being called out for it.

I don’t know about a YouTube playlist because most of these songs aren’t on there but I did make a SoundCloud playlist when I was making the 8tracks version.
