Course: 11/12 ArtsLesson category Language: Introduction to Creative Non-Fiction * Note, students must be familiar with regular non-fiction before this will really fit in with their * Withholding tax: students to read "Life is precious or It's Not "by Barbara Kingsolver. This is an essay that can be found in the book of essays entitled Small Kingsolver Wonder.Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will understand the basics of what constitutes a creative nonfiction essay. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through the analysis of the essay "Life is precious, or It's Not" by Barbara Kingsolver.Procedure / Input: Teacher will define creative nonfiction as concisely as possible. "The texture of the story with facts and critical analysis." Examples can be given as In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, a writer from the beginning Eudora Welty, Small Wonder, or High Tide in Tucson are creative nonfiction essays by Barbara Kingsolver. On the board, the teacher will write the common elements of fiction, creative and go through each one, explaining what they mean. The common elements of creative nonfiction are:-Flexible Form: Creative nonfiction can follow any form - essay, short story, even poetry.-literary approach to Nonfiction: The use of literary devices, such as tone, dialogue and description.-Self-discovery, of exploration: Creative Nonfiction is all exploring an idea or problem, disovery self and the exploration is the result of this.-Personal presence: the voice of the writer creates an identity - usually themself .- Veracity: conveying the truth, in other words between facts and critical analysisLastly teacher finally explain what a creative nonfiction essay needs to accomplish. The creative non-fiction piece goes beyond the personal history and teaches the reader something, expands readers' thoughts, opinions, makes the reader see something in a different light.Modeling: Teacher will give an example of "personal presence" from " Life is precious. .. "Teacher will explain how this phrase is the personal presence and how that affects the story. For example, in her essay Kingsolver refers to herself as "I" and speaks of "my friend". Use an example to show students how to create a personal presence. For the truth at all times the references Kingsolver a fact, a historical event, or something of analysis on the ground.
