Whoa that tag about Miles being the only confirmed non monosexual also being the most promiscuous... I didn't even notice but that's exactly why I'm getting my pitchfork ready
Oh man, you got me started…
Besides the giant eye roll on my part was me rage screaming, snapping my laptop in half and then stomping on the shattered pieces until they turned to dust while foaming at the mouth and somehow simultaneously scoffing to myself “of course they did!”.
Before #RiseAndGrind we had every reason to believe that Tristan was the more sexually experienced of the two. Degrassi made a deliberate decision to change that and make Miles the more sexually experienced. Not to mention that they had to retcon several of the other characters sexual histories plus throw in three sexual partners for Miles that 1) didn’t even have names, 2)have never been mentioned before and 3) won’t ever be referenced again as literal placeholders to make Miles appear more sexually promiscuous than anybody else. There is no evidence for this at anytime during the show.
So yeah, Degrassi most definitely took their only nonmonosexual character and contorted their own cannon to make him the most sexually promiscuous. Yikes. All this only perpetuates the stereotype that bisexuals are super sexual. It’s damaging and harmful and hurtful. This is not the only time I’ve noticed some bisexual stereotypes in Degrassi but it’s maybe the one that pisses me off the most because they made a conscious choice and they had to go out of their way to do it.
I think it’s ok to applaud Degrassi for the things that it does well. But I also think it’s ok to point out the things that need improvement. Their handling of LGBT issues and characters is not perfect (*cough cough* Gracevas) and it can be done better. I think the people who work on Degrassi are proud of their shows progressive reputation. In general I think they do a good job. But it does mean that I hold them to a relatively high standard. These characters and these stories matter. I want to love all of it and for people to remember the greatness that is this franchise for years to come. Constantly writing old and tired bisexual stereotypes is not going to be remembered because practically every other tv show treats their bisexual characters this exact way. When a tv show can’t even mention that their characters is in fact bi or pan it’s a problem and we have a long way to go because I start lauding them as being super progressive in their depiction.
