I realize it

flights of stairs above the city

pretending the sobs I hear aren’t real.

A myriad of lights snake out like torches

and I stare at the rooves

imagining figures climbing,

running through a life that isn’t mine.

Millions of lives in this city

and none of them even know my name.

But it’s a shame

for my existence to drown in a sea of strangers.

And what an existence!

Pathetic, forgettable, a plastic bag

dreaming it isn’t

discarded,

waiting to be buried in an unmarked grave.

What an existence.

Thousands of steps above millions of minds

and I realize it.

It feels impressive

though I know I’m alone

pretending a cup of coffee is a hand to hold onto.
