Bright stars and interesting molecules are forming and being liberated in the Statue of Liberty nebula. The complex nebula resides in the star forming region called RCW 57, and besides the iconic monument, to some it looks like a flying superhero or a weeping angel. By digitally removing the stars, this re-assigned color image showcases dense knots of dark interstellar dust, fields of glowing hydrogen gas ionized by these stars, and great loops of gas expelled by dying stars. A detailed study of NGC 3576 showed at least 33 massive stars in the end stages of formation, and the clear presence of the complex carbon molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are thought to be created in the cooling gas of star forming regions, and their development in the Sun's formation nebula five billion years ago may have been an important step in the development of life on Earth.

35 Years!

Today, I’m 35 years old!

When I was only 16 years old, I was told over and over by my doctors that I would be blessed to see my 18th birthday. When I turned 17, my lungs were so badly infected that I thought it might be true...but I fought and always thought to myself: I’m going to live forever!

Well, metaphorically speaking of course!

Nevertheless, age 18 came and went and I realized that no doctor or specialist can tell me when I am going to die.

With the severity of my lung disease, age 25 was my new life expectancy and I saw it as a goal to beat. Then it was age 27 and 30...I just kept going...

Then age 30 did come and I made three good attempts at dying, spent 167 days in the hospital fighting aspergillosis and pneumonia. I was certain I wasn’t going to see 31...but fought on...fought for every breath!

By age 32, I was diagnosed with endstage lung disease and given 2 years to live...well, I’m 35! Still fighting, but for the first time in my life...it is getting harder.

The message is to fight through all odds. If they give you two years, take five! Have something to live for...be resilient!

The Late, Late Show

When I used to stay up all night I saw the most extraordinary movies on the late, late show.  This is how I learned that pre-code movies contained sex and drugs.  The 1920's were really quite shocking which is easy to miss if you watched movies made after the decency codes.

My grandmother, at the end of her life, was like the late, late show. There was a story saved for her last few weeks.  There was a girl in the village who found herself pregnant out of marriage.  Her father, a fisherman, was out at sea so her mother made arrangements through the priest to give the baby up to a married couple.  Things were kept quiet. The girl worked in the fields until she went into labor.

Unfortunately, her father returned from sea to discover his daughter in labor at the cottage door.  The father blocked the door and wouldn't let his daughter inside.  Her mother was beating and clawing at the father's back to get to her daughter.  My grandmother, all of eight, watched this with other children from the village.  The girl bled to death outside the cottage door.  The children watched silently.  The mother wailed from her knees.

"That", said my grandmother, "is why they want to make abortion legal. Because people do that to their own."  I was silent.  My grandmother returned to her rosary.
