"IOHN ENDICUT GOV" . . #EndicottRock state park in Meredith, New Hampshire is located along the banks of #LakeWinnipesaukee near #WeirsBeach. Here housed in a small pavilion is a rock discovered while dredging the Weirs Channel. This rock includes several inscriptions including "IOHN ENDICUT GOV" a reference to #JohnEndicott the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony for five non-consecutive terms from 1629 to 1665. . . Inscribed in 1652 the rock is believed (incorrectly) to mark the northern most point of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which would have been 3 miles north of the Merrimack River, but was placed here closer to the headwaters of the Pemigewasset River. The inscriptions have faded with the elements over the time and the rock was "lost" for many years until its rediscovery sometime around 1833. It's enclosure was built in the late 1800's to protect the rock for public viewing. #igersnh #igersnewengland #famousrocksofnewhampshire #igersnh_lakesregion (at Endicott Rock)
