ranma is probably the gayest rumiko takahashi series, but urusei yatsura has the most girl kissing and yuri ship potential. so many female characters and many of them have chemistry. and then ryuunosuke gets paired of with, what, 5 of the girls? ran, shinobu, asuka, kurama, benten. And of course, all of the girls in school are smitten with her, fully knowing she is female. and then I find it really interesting how Nagisa is presented as Ryuunosuke’s inverse, but is much more transfemme coded with the occasional “I’m a man!” comedy beat. We don’t see Nagisa resenting or truly being “forced” into femininity, from my memory. So basically, I’m counting Nagisa as well as yuri potential.
And then we have benten and oyuki, who are often coded as a couple. In the new anime, I feel like this is really emphasized as the two are always presented together as a pair. They never have genuine male love interests, their relationship to each other is the closest relationship we see.
Of course, I love interpreting ran as being in love with lum. This is way less supported by the text, but it’s such a fun idea. Ran is so obsessed with lum. And with how she blames lum for her childhood trauma, she’s a really interesting character. And of course, she’s the one who is kissing all of the girls to use her succubus powers. The fact that she never uses this power on lum is an absolute travesty I will never forgive.
