[nanny-notes]

The longer I am a Nanny (going on 8 years) the more and more content I am with not having my own. I always assumed I would have kids by the time I was 30 (I am 26) now I know for sure I'm not having any in the next five years (minimum). I love love my job but I also really like walking out the door to my own independent free life at the end of the day :)

For the reference questions; Definitely include both phone number and email address and let the family decide how they want to contact them. Make sure you tell your references to expect a phone call or email from (parents name).

Getting a bit tired of their father telling them that this is OK for boys but not girls and only girls can do this. If Ty wants to be a princess today then we'll play Princess. If Kayley wants to grow up and play in the NFL then we've got a hell of a lot of work to do to get there and I should probably read the rules to double check but why can't she play football? I'm getting tired of Ty coming back from Daddy Weekends and telling me only boys can be strong and girls have to be quiet and pretty. No, little man. Girls can be strong. I've known girls who could toss his father around like a rag doll and I rarely come across a girl capable of being quiet and pretty more than 30% of the time. 

But its all kind of why I love that they both enjoy the super hero movies. Yeah the costumes can be a bit questionable and some themes aren't great for an 8 and 4 year old but that's why I watch them first and hold the remote. But superhero movies are so badass because we see women coming in and saving the world right along side men. We see people who are weird and different and considered nasty little outcasts coming in and turning the world on it's ear. So maybe for a hour and a half every so often we sit down and watch people kick butt. But when the credits roll we have talks like that one today. I have a little boy running around talking about how amazing these female roles are and asking if he can learn the skills that make them so amazing and it never occurs to him that he shouldn't be able to because maybe its something just for girls. And my soon to by 9 year old little girl who has been pushed into cheerleading and modeling and dance classes and anything girly her whole life gets to see that Pepper Potts can save her boyfriend's life. BlackWidow can handle Hulk and save New York City (and the world) and no one is going to think less of them because the cups they put on before filming are in their bras and not their pants.

And you know what else? The men in these movies, those big strong tough guys who save the world? Yeah Tony is having anxiety attacks. Wolverine breaks down and moves into a cave in the Canadian wilderness. Cap pushes himself to his physical limits in the gym trying to put muddled mind back together. Bruce Banner has a whole lot of crap going on making him 9 kinds of vulnerable... have you seen the heartbreak and responsibility Thor gets? They make bad choices in dealing with their stuff sometimes. But it shows men being broken and rising above it and working through it and putting themselves together and accepting help, not always willingly, from those around them who give a hoot. 

I won't argue that these movies are flawed. I won't argue that comic books and superheroes can push some unsatisfactory stereotypes. But if they give me that opening to teach the right thing then I'm going to jump on them.
