Tonight we finished tracking for good. My good friend Jonny, who played drums on the record, took the time out to add some final percussion on most of the tracks. It was fairly laid back and didn't take too much time or effort, though we did end up breaking the cheap tambourine I had bought.
Now we just need a final mix and master and we are ready to release 'Errata' EP. I am excited for people to finally hear it, its taken a lot of work but we are finally on the home stretch.
More updates very soon.
Oratory
Tracking of instruments was more or less completed on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. It has really been non-stop the past couple of days and the whole process had been beginning to wear a little thin. Last night I was at the practice room until midnight trying to sing the entire thing. Vocals are always a sticking point with me, and though I am never truly happy, I think I managed to get something acceptable recorded for every track.
Piano Man
Spent some time on Sunday afternoon returning to my roots, adding a little ditty on piano in the bridge/outro to one of the new songs. Piano is great for adding texture and fleshing out the lows/mids and works well when subtly hidden in the mix. I'm not going to over do it, and I simply don't have the skills I once had on this thing, but at least those years of music lessons are being put to some use these days.

Friday saw the second percussion session take place, and despite it being the 13th things actually went much more smoothly than the first session. I had already been down to set up most of the equipment the previous night, so we made good time right off the bat. We rented a snare from the drum shop down the road to change things up a little and this worked out very well. Despite my concerns about consistency, the second set of drums match up perfectly.
We spent some time after the live drums were completed with room mics, kick drums and floor toms which was fun, and hopefully we can sculpt this in to something quite dramatic.
With a skeleton of every song now complete, I simply need to flesh the tracks out. I've completed the instrumentation on around 3 tracks now. There are some extras to add in here and there but we are on target for an August release. I'm trying to put a lot of thought into the final arrangements. Variety and consistency is a tough balance to strike. Still much to do.
La Magie Rouge
We have decided to let you into this process, somewhat. It was a miserable July Friday and we took to the studio with big expectations. We were immediately deflated by a closed drum shop, a broken violin bow, a poor sounding snare and what we thought to be a broken condenser microphone and mixing desk channel. The latter three issues were resolved in a timely fashion.
We managed to capture two of the six tracks today, abstaining from work on the third for numerous reasons. What we did manage to get down was extremely tight and sounded great. The plan is to work on these for the remainder of the week and to reunite next Friday to get the rest down. More from the red room soon.
Latinate
Tracking for the new EP which we are calling 'Errata' will commence this Friday and last for a couple of weeks. Six full demos have been completed since March and it has been quite a journey in terms of composing something more instrumentally and lyrically diverse.
Updates from the recording process and teasers to follow.
