I had the privilege of participating in the #MSH16DaysofActivism and supporting @uwimonaguildeac campaign. I represent the COLOUR 🏴BLACK🏴: Women who face different forms of violence for political reasons 🏴Violence against women in political life is any act of, or threat of violence or psychological harm prevents women from exercising and realizing their political rights, whether in public or private spaces. 🏴Based on the UN definition of Violence Against Women in Politics, women are violated when the following are impeded: •the right to vote and hold public office •the right to vote in secret and to freely campaign •the right to associate and assemble •the right to enjoy freedom of opinion and expression. Such violence can be perpetrated by a family member, community member and or by the State. 🏴Studies have shown that younger women and women of colour, including black and Asian women, are also more likely to experience gender-based political violence. 🏴The road into politics can prove to be challenging for any political aspirant. But women, more so, have to navigate additional micro-aggressions and systemic violence which make the experience even more difficult and daunting. 🏴The narrative of working twice as hard to get half the recognition and respect is a very real phenomenon for women in the political arena. Women have been fighting for their space at the table and for the value of their voice. 🏴We continue to use our voice for women who are still being abused within the political space. 🏴Ubuntu! To cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and help grantee organisations and beneficiaries with recovery in the context of the pandemic. On 19 November 2020, with the immense support of @untrustfundevaw , EWEI distributed care packages (food items) aside Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the 80 Our Safe Spaces (OSS) project beneficiaries from Ungwan Dosa & Ungwan Romi communities of Kaduna State respectively. As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) global campaign, we spoke to some of our female HIAS staff working on GBV prevention and response around the globe. We asked them what their work means to them and to reflect on their activism. Seka shared: “This year, 16 days of activism is a great opportunity for HIAS’ female staff to raise awareness on equality in the labor world. It is also an opportunity to sensitize colleagues on sexual exploitation and abuse, which may occur while interacting with beneficiaries.
