the corona virus and climate change are two villains that can possibly team up on us
the war between generations has just met a common foe! What can turn this useless fight between boomers, gen z, and millenials into a necessary alliance? impending doom (...not to be dramatic)
boomers are rightfully scared of this pandemic that targets older generations and mostly spares younger generations. meanwhile millenials and gen z are rightfully scared by the fate awaiting this planet threatened by climate change.
how can climate change and corona join hands?
well, with the warming of global temperatures and the melting of icecaps, a lot of old diseases may be awakened that have been sleeping under the ice. forget diseases in our recorded history (which there were a lot of deadly ones)- what about prerecorded history...? what did ancient civilizations have to face in the past?
The oldest glacial ice in antartica can reach up to 1,000,000 years old. the age of the oldest glacier in greenland is 100,000 years old. The age of the oldest Alaskan glacier (that we know of) is about 30,000 years old. And the span of recorded history is only roughly 5,000 years. There could be dangerous bacteria and diseased animals preserved in the ice, and if those contaminants attack our planet’s immune system in these already dire times... that’s not good.
but let’s take a step back and get on just the surface level of the climate change problem! with melting ice follows the rise of water levels, increasing the spread of germs in flood areas. dangerous weather, like hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and tsunamis make it harder for people in those disaster zones to reach relief. making it harder for healthcare, paramedics, and just plain hygiene and sanitation to do its job. the changing ph levels of the oceans doesn’t bode well either, increasing algea and dead fishies in the waters is... really unsanitary. animals that are exposed to these situations are also at risk. there’s going to be refugees from all of these problems as well, migratinng to safer areas is the reasonable response to all these things.
now, accompany that with the possibility that the corona virus may mutate. and then... you see the problem.
gen z, millenials, and boomers have been fighting for a long time. boomers in government and business have been ignoring our pleas for them to implement the necessary change and efforts to turn this tide around on climate change. while gen z and millenials have still not reacted with the right force to push the issue.
but with these new villains threatening ALL LIFE ON EARTH we have to put our differences aside and work together.
