Her nerves had been shot ever since Tommy came by earlier that day with his new lead on Abby’s whereabouts. Who the fuck did he think he was trying to guilt Ellie into going after Abby again after all the damage that woman had done to every one of them? She had given him an earful then told him to leave before his words could upset her lover even more. No matter what, Dina would be in Ellie’s corner. Wherever Ellie went, Dina went. And that was that. She understood that Tommy was hurting but so was Ellie.
Ellie got out of bed in the middle of the night. Dina felt the light creaking of the springs and dip of the mattress as Ellie moved followed by the soft scuffing of her feet as she left the bedroom. A knot had formed in the pit of her stomach and she needed to get up, even if it was just to ease her worries. After taking their sleeping son from his spot in the middle of the bed and gently putting him in his crib, Dina went downstairs. Her heart was pounding like a drum in her chest. She held her breath right up until she saw Ellie in front of the livingroom window, silently staring out into the night.
The sadness that she saw in the woman she loved tore at Dina’s heart.
Her head turned at the sound of Dina’s approach. It was probably written all over Dina’s face how worried she was in that moment. ‘I’m not leaving you here.’ She murmured those words with such reassurance and tenderness that tears immediately formed in Dina’s eyes. Through blurred vision, she looked at Ellie. “Good.” Her body seemed to move of its own accord then, drawn to the warm and inviting frame of her lover. One arm went around Ellie’s neck and the fingers of its counterpart got lost in soft brown tresses as she held her close.
“I was afraid Tommy had gotten to you.” Her lips tenderly pressed to her lover’s jaw. Then came another kiss followed by a third. “I don’t think I could handle not knowing if you’re safe. Not again.” Those few days at the theater were rough. The combination of being so nauseous and exhausted because of her pregnancy on top of being worried about Ellie had taken a toll on Dina. At last, their lips met and molded together as both of her arms tightened around the taller woman’s neck. She could taste the saltiness from her own tears.
