“How do you leave the past behind when it keeps finding ways to get to your heart?”

“…I, uh…I’m not… sure,”
It is only after those words leave her lips that the young woman’s blood runs cold. Serena cannot claim to know why Looker is saying what he is, and in a way too vague for her to guess what ‘past’ the man is referring to. All she knows is that her mind instantly takes a disliking to it– that her heart reacts fast enough to plunge into the pit of her stomach, while simultaneously rising to an uncomfortable pattern of beating. Her gaze moves to rest on her father’s features, then away, and then back again. It could be anything– past missions, horrible memories, Grace, other people, her– but without any further explanation from him, all the girl can do is remain sitting at the table and wait. A single hand leaves the handle of a mug to spread its fingers on the tablecloth, and then relax, in attempt to hide any quivers that might sneak through. She has always been the sort to try and hide her own emotions for the sake of others.
“It would depend on what part of your past that you’re trying to leave behind, right? And if you really want… that,”
‘I can leave’, her mind silently quips, ‘–it would be easier than watching you go again’. Yet, Serena does not find the confidence to let those words escape from her lips– not when she hopes, somewhat desperately, that he is not trying to segue into confessing that he wants to cut ties with her for good.
“…I can–”
Just go. Pale lips purse themselves together for a fraction of a second, as though it would be curb the feeling that festers in the pit of her stomach. No, the trainer cannot jump to any conclusions just yet– he has not said what it is, or why he is bringing this topic up. All her thoughts and feelings are merely defensive reactions to something that has pained her before. Grey eyes move off to the side once again.
“–…listen, if you want. I mean… I’m not little enough for whatever it is to upset me.”
