Repost @engineeringvision with @get_repost ・・・ Built to beat the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Shelby Daytona was a winning aerodynamics exercise. It was noticed that on “Mulsanne” straight, the Shelby Cobra (convertible) was about 30 mph (48kmh) slower than the 250 GTO and it was losing more than ten seconds on the lap. So Carroll Shelby asked his employee Peter Brock to re-design Cobra’s body. But, according to the rules of that time, it was allowed to make changes directly on the existing model rather than building new specimens. Shelby, who wasn’t happy about that rules, went around threatening the major automotive industry figures and track owner by saying that if they hadn’t voted to make the whole car body become replaceable, he would no longer have run his cars at their tracks. After obtaining consent, Pete Brock removed the Cobra body leaving only one seat on the chassis, on which the driver (Ken Miles) sat and then he designed the windshield and the roof on his posture as well as modifying the general aerodynamics of the car. The result was a car able to reach 190mph (310kmh) and that made the driver conquer the pole position at Daytona 2000km.
