Engine For Gabriel - Ylvis
Engine For Gabriel is a single/music video by the Norwegian comedy duo, Ylvis – brothers Bård and Vegard Ylvisåker. Specs Released : 1 March 2016 Chronology : ‘Old Friends’ 19 Jan 2016 – ‘Engine For Gabriel’ – ‘Language of Love’ 15 March 2016 Genre : Afro-Pop Length : 03:47 Music : Bård Ylvisåker/Vegard Ylvisåker /Lars Devik Lyrics : Bård Ylvisåker/Vegard Ylvisåker/Christian Løchstøer/Lars Devik Producer : Lars Devik Director : Ole Martin Hafsmo Background The project was sparked when Vegard came across Gabriel Nderitu’s story while he was browsing aviation videos on Youtube. Gabriel, an IT specialist from the suburb of Kahawa West in Kenya, has built 14 planes in his backyard. He tests them on Kitengela Plain, but so far none have flown successfully. His planes are called ‘Upendo’ which is ‘love’ in Swahili. Ylvis was intrigued by his story and as they were having Bjørn Kjos (aviator and CEO of Norwegian Air Shuttle, born and raised in Ringerike, Norway) as a guest on their show, ‘I Kveld Med Ylvis’, they thought that they should show him clips of Gabriel’s attempts and ask his advice on what Gabriel needs to do to succeed. His answer was that Gabriel needed a bigger engine, with at least 100 horsepower, like a Rotax 914. After their interview with Bjørn Kjos, people contacted them to encourage Gabriel and ask how they can help him and so the #EngineForGabriel project was born. Ylvis decided to make a music video to raise money to get an engine for Gabriel and Bjørn Kjos said they are welcome to use one of his airline’s hangars as a shooting location. He also stars in the music video. A website was created, www.engineforgabriel.com, where people could donate money. They also asked people to make a short video to encourage Gabriel while holding a sign with the hashtag #ENGINEFORGABRIEL in a cool location. These videos would then be used in the music video, as well as a clip recorded with their audience of their talkshow in the Oslo Folketeateret. The project started at the beginning of February 2016, the music video was released on 1 March (on a season 5 episode of their talkshow) and by mid March enough money had been raised to get an engine and TV Norge had agreed to sponsor a pilot’s licence for Gabriel. Ylvis broke the news to Gabriel in a Skype interview. He was due to start his pilot’s licence training on 4 July 2016 at the Ninety Nines Flying School, Wilson Airport, Nairobi, Kenya. Production Technical • Producer : Las Devik • Director : Ole Martin Hafsmo • Filming Technique : Music playback at 120%, camera recording in slow motion to create flowing effect in final product. • Footage : On location at several airports (19 February 2016), #ENGINEFORGABRIEL videos, news footage about Gabriel Nderitu, clip filmed with ‘I Kveld Med Ylvis’ audience in the Oslo Folketeateret (spot the circling camera guy in the outro of the final video!). • Shooting Locations : Gardermoen/Oslo Airport (Norwegian Air Shuttle hangar), Kjeller Airport, Hønefuss Airport, Notodden Airport. Music • Composers : Bård Ylvisåker, Vegard Ylvisåker, Lars Devik • Genre : Afro-Pop (a music genre pioneered, among others, by Miriam Makeba aka Mama Afrika, with her 1960s hits ‘Pata Pata’ and ‘The Click Song/Qongqothwane’) • Composition : The opening is similar to, but not based on, the opening of ‘Cecelia’ by Simon & Garfunkel. Modulation at the outro. Lyrics • Writers : Bård Ylvisåker, Vegard Ylvisåker, Christian Løchstøer, Lars Devik • Language : English and Swahili/Kiswahili (the official language of Kenya) • Lyrical Easter Egg? : This may be a stretch, but could this lyric "Habadilo, habadiloap" be related to "boodelooap" in A Capella? Google translate gives "habadiloap" as "the badiloap" in Swahili. So, habadiloap = the badiloap = the boodelooap?! ‘From his compound in Kahawa West, Gabriel Nderitu has assembled an aircraft from scratch and is now polishing it for a test drive in Kitengela next week.’ Sikia, sikia hadithi ya ajabu kuhusu Gabriel. [Listen, listen to the unbelievable story of Gabriel.] Ndoto, ndoto kubwa, lakini injini ni ndogo mno. [Big, big dream, engine too small.] Down in Kenya a boy once had a vision (habadilo habadiloap) A dream to soar the mighty skies (habadilo habadiloap) People laughed at him “you will never make it, it’s just a fantasy” (habadilo…) But he swore, he would never give up trying He tried and tried and tried and tried And when he tested plane fourteen it looked very promising Until it didn’t look promising at all All he needs is just a little help from his friends around the world Gabriel, you’re a true aviator Sooner or later, you’ll be king of the sky Gabriel, Mister Airplane Creator Never give up your dream, we’ll give you the wings to fly ‘What more can we do to help Gabriel?’ ‘You know, we need help from someone who loves flying and just knows everything about airplanes.’ ‘I know just the guy!’ This is old Bjørn Kjos from Ringerike (???????? ringerike) A legendary aviator man (habadilo habadiloap) ‘I am the founder of Norwegian, which is a company flying all over the world, With more than 100 aircrafts. We have bases in Bangkok, and… We don’t care about your airline can you help us? What is Gabriel doing wrong? ‘I think he needs a bigger engine, at least 100 horse power. Something like a Rotax 914 or similar.’ That’s enough, old man, let’s get back to our plan Gabriel, we will get you an engine The Rotax 914, ‘The Horse Power King’ Gabriel, we hope you are ready That your airplane is steady when you leave the ground Kurusha ndege angani Afrika [to fly in Africa] Injini ndogo, tuna ufumbuzi [engine is small, we have the solution] Kurusha ndege angani Afrika [to fly in Africa] Injini ndogo [engine is small] He needs a bigger engine Much-a bigger engine Gabriel needs an engine Rotax injini Are you gonna help your brother? Aviation Related Trivia • In a ‘Behind the Scenes’ video, one of the planes in the background of the EngineforGabriel video is a Boeing B 737-800, Registration EI-FJH, delivered to Norwegian Airlines on 16 February 2016, three days before the shoot! • Norwegian Air Shuttle planes have tail art that feature portraits of historically important Scandinavians. For example, Edvard Grieg, a Romantic composer, most famous for the Peer Gynt Suite. • In a behind the scenes video from Magnus Devold’s Periscope, the model plane that Magnus and Vegard discuss is a Albatros D.V (5). It’s a World War II plane that was among the aircraft flown by Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron! • On the way between shooting locations (Gardermoen and Kjeller Airports) Bård, Vegard, Magnus and Calle do a Periscope Q&A in the car. Vegard points out the place where F16s are repaired - AIM Norway (Aerospace Industrial Maintenance) and the military tower that is only operational when F16s are present. Engine For Gabriel
I only found this now >.> But it’s still not too late if you want to donate and help Gabriel in Kenya live his dream
“We don’t care about your airline”
I really liked the “We don’t care about your airline, can you help us?” line from “Engine for Gabriel” music video. Impatiently interrupting old man’s speech - it’s just classical Ylvis xD
And I think it’s logical that a “typical badass” Bård is saying this line, because, I guess, Vegard just wouldn’t be able to tell anyone that he “doesn’t care about their airlines" xD
#engineforgabriel This is really cool, a humorous music video to help out a guy that makes airplanes in Africa to realize his dream to fly. He needs a bigger engine to be able to fly.. Inspirational!
okay the new video is amazing im crying
