A report from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International is ringing the alarm on the practice of immigration detention in Canada, which sees immigrants with no criminal charges against them detained in holding centres, federal prisons or provincial jails for indeterminate amounts of time.
The report, #WelcomeToCanada, is calling on the Canadian government to gradually abolish the practice of immigration detention and asking provincial governments across Canada to cancel contracts with the federal government that allow for immigrant detainees to be held in provincial jails.
