Portrait of Mary Anne Bloxam (later Mrs. Frederick H. Hemming) (c.1824). Thomas Lawrence (English, 1769-1830). Oil on panel. Kimbell Art Museum.
Lawrence coveted Richard Baker’s drawings by Raphael and offered Frederick Hemming, who inherited the drawings, a companion portrait of his fiancée, Mary Anne Bloxam, in exchange for them. Bloxam was reputedly an accomplished porcelain painter, and in her portrait holds a brush as if busy at work; she is depicted in a modish white Grecian dress.
