Knight Games was a fine program by English Software in which you could compete against either a second player or the computer in a variety of medieval combat methods, such as swordfighting, crossbow, pike and more. You had a choice of rounds lasting 5 or 10 minutes (I always chose 5, as 10 is pretty long). The candle on the left of the screen border represents the time remaining in real time. The dots below that are the stamina of each player. Every blow landed removes a dot, and if you lose all your player submits, consequently losing a life (represented at the top of the screen with the shield emblems). The player to have the most remaining lives at the end of the time wins the match. Melee events were pretty easy, while shooting events were significantly tougher. My favorite event was archery, in which I once had my aim fine-tuned to great precision, but it’s devolved over the years to now be more like that of a drunken orangutan.
The game was criticized by some for the mechanics being repetitive between games, but I found that the good graphics, nice sets of music and good animation were enough to make it tolerable for me. It seems critic consensus varied widely as well, with C&VG magazine giving it only 55 out of 100 in their review of it, while Zzap! was more impressed with it, granting a score of 90%.
