THE FIRST CALL

I know a lot of artistic choices are not made by the singer and a lot of the lyrics they sing are not written by them, but let’s ignore that for the sake of the story.

This happens after IT'S COMPLICATED and 19th ANNIVERSARY, it's the 3rd part of the YeNaKyu 2024 storyline.

The phone rang four times before Eunhyuk answered.

Nara was already wondering if she should hang up and forget about it. It would be better, wouldn't it? What was she doing? She pulled the phone away from her ear, but before she could press the red key, she heard "Yeoboseyo? Nara?" on the other end of the line. She put the phone to her ear again.

“Ne, ne...” she wondered whether she should say. Maybe she should get straight to the point? Her hand began to shake, so lightly she almost didn’t notice. "How's the tour going? Are you back in Korea?" she asked, trying to get around the subject.

"Yes, but we're going to Hong Kong next week. And you? How was the trip with your parents?" he asked. She noticed that he had put the phone on speaker, as if it were just a way for them to catch up on the news. She could hear him typing something into the computer.

"It was good, very good... You know, I love history and sociology. It was very exciting," Nara said, and it had indeed been exciting, but she didn't feel like talking about it at the moment. How could she transition the conversation without sounding too off-key? "Did you see Kyuhyun's MV that came out today? Have you called him already?" she asked.

"I'll call him tomorrow when the album comes out. Why?" Hyukjae stopped typing and waited for her to answer, a smile at the corner of his mouth. For a few seconds, the call was silent. Nara was a little nervous about the next thing she was going to ask, but he wouldn't give up. He was too invested in this conversation.

"Do you know if he broke up with someone recently?" she said quietly and instantly regretted asking. She felt vulnerable – and wrong, as if she shouldn't be asking about it.

"Broke up?" Hyuk laughed out loud. She hadn't expected him to be that dumb, had she? It wasn't the first time she'd called him to find out about Kyu's personal life, instead of asking him directly, since they were 'friends'. Hyuk laughed again. "Ask what you really want to know," he insisted.

"I, no, I just... LEE HYUKJAE" she shouted, angry, trying to scold him. He laughed harder.

“I'll only say if you ask what you really want to know,” he replied, even though he already knew exactly why she was calling this time.

The MV for "Unending Days" had just been released, the title song from Kyuhyun's new album. Nara was poking around to find out if he had a new girlfriend, if the song was dedicated to another woman... just so she could be sad about it.

It was stupid, she knew. Also, it was much easier to spy on Kyu's life through Hyuk. She'd been doing it for years, but it was getting harder and harder to fool him — well, she thought she was fooling him.

“Does she want to know if she has competition?” Donghae asked, laughing.

“GET THE PHONE OFF THE SPEAKER!” Nara shouted, not knowing how to react. She was already feeling overexposed, with Hyuk demanding she tell him why she was saying that and now Donghae was on the call too? She wanted to hang up and stick her head underground like an ostrich.

"He did ‘The Story Behind’ for her too, didn't he? What's that? Two songs in one year?" Donghae continued talking, as if he was having a simple conversation with Hyuk and she wasn't listening.

"That's if he doesn't put more songs on the album he's releasing tomorrow," Eunhyuk joked.

"Of course not," Nara tried to deflect. She knew that Kyu had made an album for her in 2016, just as she had made two for him before the hiatus... but it was impossible that this was happening, and she had never noticed.

She always thought it was for some other girlfriend, some other relationship — but this time she didn’t know if he had a girlfriend, or if he had broke up with someone.

Nara used to stalk all of his ex girlfriends, all of the flings Hyukjae told her about. She didn’t have social media herself, but she would ask her manager to see someone on Instagram, or open the page in Jiyong’s computer. She would pretend she didn’t care, that nothing was happening, but deep down she would imagine how his hands were on the other woman’s body, and how his lips would be kissing her skin — and that thought would make her blood boil.

No. She would close the page and pretend nothing happened.

“Everyone knows that they're both for you, it's kind of sad, but at least he's sublimating his sadness or whatever psychology says,” Hyuk said, interrupting her line of thought.

“We thought he would move on after the army, or the pandemic, but even today when he drinks he ends up talking about you”, Donghae explained. When they drank together, Kyu didn't act like that, they just spent hours talking and laughing together, as friends... as friends? Nara tensed her jaw, feeling her stomach churn. "...and when you're sober too, if you're late for practice or if someone talks about you on a variety show. It's weird that you've been separated for 12 years, had affairs with other people and..." he continued, but Nara was no longer able to think straight.

“Nine years,” Hyuk corrected. “They hooked up at the time of Devil too.”

“WHAT?” Hae shouted. He had no idea that had happened.

“HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?” Nara also shouted from the other end of the cell phone. She had never said that to him (or to anyone). How could he know? Had it been Kyu? Of course, he could tell whoever he wanted, but she hadn't expected he would tell Hyukjae. Kangin? Sure. Maybe they did talk because she disappeared after the show. But Hyuk?

"I heard you in the dorm once, when I went back to get my coat... I think you were relinking, I don't know. I left quickly", he explained, and Nara even held her breath. Fuck. She hadn't expected to discover this almost a decade after.

Nara heard a slapping sound on the connection and then Hae reprimanded his friend, saying, “Why didn't you tell me?”. In fact, they seemed to share everything, but thank God Hyuk chose to keep that information that would definitely become a big gossip within the group.

“SHUT UP, HYUK” Nara scolded him, so he wouldn't say any more.

Other members might have noticed at the time, but none of them said anything. Hae certainly wouldn't have noticed, he was the slowest of them all... which made her realize that, if he had noticed how ostentatiously Kyu showed that he still liked her, it meant that Kyu made it very clear.

He wasn't hiding it from any of them, just from her. And why was he hiding it from her? Nara thought he was already on to someone else, that they could just be friends and… she didn't even know what she was thinking.

"She thinks she's hiding something," Hyuk mocked. "Kyu also thinks we don't notice, but none of his relationships last, and he's still in love with you."

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

It was the only thing repeating in Nara's mind.

It wasn't possible. Saying it out loud has a different effect from just thinking it in your own head. Why couldn't she have found out sooner? She thought it was better not to get too involved in Kyu's life. She had treated him so badly, treated his heart like trash when he just wanted to cherish her; she thought there was no going back for both of them. And now this?

She hung up the phone, not knowing what to do. Now she had an even bigger problem: she'd had sex with Yesung. What was she going to do? She sighed. The acid in her stomach was starting to bother her.

She could pretend that the conversation had never happened, that she didn't know the song was for her, and continue going out with Yesung. After all, why did they always have to do everything so publicly? They could declare themselves face to face, without having to turn everything into music – even though she herself was to blame for that, since she had also made albums about relationships.

And what about the group? If she called Yesung her boyfriend, what would happen? She couldn't not acknowledge the relationship, as she used to with her previous boyfriends, but he would be her first official boyfriend since Kyu. Everyone knew that Kyuhyun still liked her.

Did Yesung know? She took a deep breath.

What if she got back with Kyu? Would it work out, or would they end up getting hurt again? Yesung would hate her, for sure.

She didn't know what to do, she liked them. Both of them. She didn't want either of them to be sad or angry.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

“Nara?” Hyuk asked, but she didn't answer as she had hung up. "How rude of her to slink off like that," he said, before shrugging.

He and Donghae stared at each other, laughing.

"Someone had to speak up," Hae commented, receiving a nod. It was about time someone talked about it.
