Disdain, Disgust, or Merely Discontent? | The Grumpier Side of Jeremy Northam’s Acting (1/??)
“Stick to sums.”
As Wigram in Enigma (2001)
Holiday Cards from Jeremy Northam Characters
No. 7: Mr Wigram in Enigma (2001)
Want to know the definition of “snarky”? Forget the dictionary. Just look at Jeremy Northam give one of Mr Wigram’s mocking smiles in Enigma (2001, dir. Michael Apted).
Have yourself a happy snarky Monday!
I was tagged by @lwom and @ralphsmotorbike to name ten characters I would kiss. You knew I was going to use ten Jeremy Northam characters, right?
Let’s start with this archery-playing gentleman, shall we?
This sad lovely man looks like he could use a good snogging. I’d be happy to oblige. . .
And then we have Mr Snarks-a-Lot; I’d love to plant one on that face.
Paging Dr Sexy!
As soon as this fella figures out who he really is, I’m there.
“Sir” Walter, I am an absolute fool for your naughty ways!
“Make out with an English professor who looks like this” is #1 on my bucket list.
Only thing better than an English prof is an English poet. Especially when he looks at you this intensely.
C’mon now. Who wouldn’t want to kiss this sweet baby face?
A con man with a heart of gold; my favorite kind!
For those of you keeping score at home, that was: Mr Knightley from Emma, Henslowe Fisk from Dean Spanley, Mr Wigram from Enigma, Dr Matt Proctor from Miami Medical, Morgan Sullivan from Cypher, Walter Hagen from Bobby Jones Stroke of Genius, Edward Nathan from The Misadventures of Margaret, Randolph Henry Ash from Possession, Fitz Fitzgerald from Piece of Cake, and Harry Sawyer from Happy Texas.
Jeremy, your character [in Enigma], the spy master, is like a 40s matinee idol. Who were your influences?
JN: When we screened it at Sundance there was a Q&A afterwards and this guy said: 'You at the back with the purple sweater, I can't remember your name but how many Cary Grant movies did you see before playing this role?'
My theory is everything goes into the melting pot but I certainly didn't look at any one person's work. Old movies are not necessarily the best areas for research because acting styles have changed.
