A wonderful day in Pigna with our American friends and guests Suzanne and Carol! Suzanne and Carol came to visit us this year again, staying in our Belle Époque apartment in Menton. They had read our blog and wanted to see our loved Pigna - a absolutely unique little village in Liguria, Italy only 45 min from Menton. Pigna is the birth town of my father in law and very dear to me and my partner, so when somebody wants to see Pigna we are very excited! First we drove to ristorante Terme di Pigna. With a stunning view of Pigna we had lunch cooked by the family running it since 40 years. As it is mushroom season now we - amongst many other delicious things - ordered fresh tagliatelle with fresh mushrooms picked from the area. D E L I C I O U S. And with it we drank the wine Rossese also produced in the region. Afterwards we went to our olive mill located not far from the restaurant in the middle of two small mountain rivers. There we met our wonderful guests from Holland who told us that they had been cooking fresh vegetables from our new veggie garden every night. Stuffed zucchini was on the menu last night... At this time of the year, in the night, the mill gets surrounded by thousands of fireflies as well - looking like a true firework created by nature. It only happens once per year - typically now in the middle of June. I saw it last year - it is impossible to describe - it’s just so magical when experienced in real life. I’m so glad they got the chance to do it. Anyways now they said they loved it so much they might want to move down here, nothing makes us happier! Afterwards we went to Pigna and we looked around the old town and all the cute little old stone houses and finished off with a homemade gelato at the local bar Desir de Roi. Monica (the owner) does the ice cream by herself, and her husband Fabio does the best Aperol Spritz in Italy! On our way back we had to stop by in Dolceaqua- a village so pretty Clyde Monet painted it. Strolling around in the old stone village we went to the big castle ruin on top, took some photos of the famous bridge and walked by one of our favorite restaurants I Gumbi (they serve local food like homemade ravioli, rabbit and much much more- you’ll eat more than you can for 20€ a head appr. Incl wine coffee deserts etc. well worth it! But we were too early unfortunately and frankly too full after our big lunch at Terme. It is with a great smile we call it a night, concluding yet again how blessed we are getting to meet wonderful people like our guests today!
