Enjoying What Is
Sometimes it's best to keep things simple, to choose a mug that doesn't say too much, to hold close the silence of the morning and enjoy the simplicity of a white ceramic mug that holds coffee without making a statement about the day.
A simple mug can be good to start the day. It holds possibility and the mug is not imbued with a feeling of joy, or pain, or whatever else I tend to project. Sometimes, instead of making a mug speak the words my soul has yet to say, it's best to hold in my hands a blank canvas and let my soul unfurl itself, surprising me with each and every turn the day may take.
Do you ever find your self, in a moment before transition, when you're just biding your time before the big change takes place? Where you're binge watching reruns of Alias for hours on end and waiting, impatiently, for the next step in the journey of life to begin? Pacing the streets of Boston, having dance parties alone in your room or taking long, luxurious mid-day naps because there's nothing else to really take up the time.
I know you all do it, it's not just me...is it? Well, anyway, it seems that we are all naturally impatient to begin something that we are really truly excited about. I find myself, at this moment, extremely impatient to begin the next phase of my journey. I want to dive right in, I want to stop living in transition and begin a life of deep roots. I want to build a community and feel as though I belong right where I am. I don't think I'm the only one who wants these things. I know, based on conversations with dear friends, that these cravings for roots, for community, for belonging aren't just in my head. I'm not alone. We all, on some level, want these things.
So how do I live in each moment and how do I learn to love the uncertainty, the simplicity of waiting? There is something to be said for just waiting. Not filling the time, not distracting from the experience. But just...simply...waiting.
It is not easy. To wait for something, patiently, without moving to speed up the wait time, or fill the pregnant silence with the sounds of my favorite movies and music to distract. I want to shout out to the world, "I'm ready to go! I want to dive right in, take the risks, and make a life for myself!"
But the trick is that life has already begun. Life is now, and by waiting, impatiently for the future to begin, I'm doing a disservice to the beauty that is my present.
So before I reach out for that coffee mug that SHOUTS something obvious about my day or my mental state. I'll wait. I reach instead for the simple mug. The mug that says, "enjoy. be present. live the questions. stop pushing for more and wait. enjoy what is."
I vow to enjoy what is. Do you?
