A Not-so-short Christmas Rant
So, for Christmas, I got some money from my parents to help me pay my rent/bills. I got The Avengers and Captain America (Though Iron Man is my favourite Avenger :P.) on DVD. I got an iPod/iPhone clock alarm docky thing. I got a two ornaments. I got a heating pad. I also got a sonicare toothbrush. My little sisters also got me things. I got a book, some lights on a string, and a t-shirt from my sister. I got some coffee cups and a drawing from my youngest sister.
And honestly, this was a great Christmas.
I live in Florida. My family lives in St. Louis. I worked two jobs Christmas day. In between both my jobs, I skyped with my family for an hour so I could open presents with them, including my grandmother. My sisters even held the iPad in their hands, so I could be in the picture my grandmother took.
My dad listened to me when I said I thought I'd need some help paying bills for Christmas, because I was going to have less shifts, what with people being gone from our district for the holidays.
My parents listened to me squeal about finally seeing Avengers and how much I loved it and Joss Whedon. I told my mom and dad one time that I wanted to have the entire Avengers collection - and they started it off for me.
My parents know I needed a better way to wake up in the morning, so I got the dock so I place my phone further away, and be sure I'll hear it, and actually get out of bed to wake up.
It's a family tradition for us to get an ornament or two (sometimes three if the parents couldn't just pick one), so when we officially have our own place, we will have our own ornaments and memories, and can create our own as an adult. I got a Jack Skellington and a Doctor Who one. My parents know that I have old loves (Nightmare Before Christmas) and newer loves (well, okay, they were loves from about the same time, but still) Doctor Who. I am so grateful that I got two. Last year, I got a Teacher Barbie ornament, because I'm working on being a teacher, and I volunteered at the high school in all of my free time.
I work at Starbucks, my feet hurt a lot when I get off work, same with my work. My dad got me the heating pad because it helps him with his sore back and such, and hoped it would help me, too.
We all needed new toothbrushes. Our parents got us "grown up" tooth brushes. It's nice to not have to pay for something so fancy as a poor college grad student.
My middle sister got me the book I was waiting for, and the t-shirt was with a grammar police man, which is perfect, because I can be such a grammar nazi. :P The string of lights are all TARDISes. Such perfect, thought out gifts!
My youngest sister got me a set of espresso mugs with little saucers, and a metal thing to hang them on. I love it, and it's perfect, what with my love for coffee. So fancy and posh. She also drew me a picture of Sherlock and John under the mistletoe. I LOVE it.
My grandmother gave me $50! She's also been sending me, since October, a check for $100 once a month to help me with my loans. I'm SO lucky to have her help, and I am so grateful for it, because I was able to make my loan payment this month with ease.
Why am I sharing all of this? Because I wanted to share that I didn't get an iphone, or an ipad, or a CAR. But SO WHAT?! I got some of the most thoughtful and helpful presents. I needed them, and LOVE them. I don't understand why I see these kids ranting about things as STUPID as them having not gotten an iPHONE. Entitlement generation, for sure. I don't understand why you are being such JERKS!
Yes, I'm not that person who's like, "Let's put the Christ back in Christmas," because I'm an atheist, but the sentiment.... This isn't a, "I've gotta have the best stuff!" kinda day. No. It's the time to be thankful for your family, and to show each other LOVE. I mean, we should show it year-round, but if you don't, this is the season to do it.
I don't understand why, when I was at Starbucks working yesterday, people were so AWFUL to me!
"What?! You're only open until THREE!?"
Heaven FORBID that Starbucks lets their employees go home to have Christmas dinner. Or open a bit later so we can have a small sleep in for Christmas. I just have never understood why so many people are even crankier on the days of the year where you should extend a small hand of niceness. I love my job, honest, and I love it so much that usually, customers don't even upset me that much. Yesterday.... The customers made me lose my appetite. They made me physically ill.
So please. Think about these things. If you're one of those kids saying, "Fuck you mom, you didn't get me the colour ipad I wanted" on your twitter, maybe you need to rethink your life. That you have placed such a value on material items to the point that the colour upsets you.... you have failed to realise the value that your mother has placed on your life. Your parents got you those gifts because it's what they could afford, or what they thought you'd like, and usually, both. Don't even think that they bought it for you out of obligation, or they would have just given you money, if that. There was actual thought that goes into a lot of these gifts, and you should be THANKFUL.
It hurts my heart to see what this generation of people are turning into.
