 Harrow The Ninth Animatic -- Sweet Hibiscus Tea by Addamii (@addamii on Tumblr!)

This is the Harrow the Ninth Animatic of all time to me. The artist perfectly communicates how nonstop everything is happening to Harrow, but how miserable and stagnant she is within it. Everything is so intense but also so agonizingly slow and it’s just miserable chaos for her. And I think the artist, in combination with the song (which was brilliantly chosen), perfectly draws you into this view of Harrow. What I also adore is the way that during the piano breaks (I don’t know music terms I’m sorry I hope that’s right) we dig beneath the miserable surface and find what underpins it. Those are always the moments when we break through tragedy and find love and that touches me so deeply. We are living in tragedy, but the artist picks the perfect moments to drop us back into love and remind us what ghosts linger in our lives and that makes me cry every single time! You’re breaking my heart, and also forcefully dragging me back into what made me fall in love with Harrow the Ninth in particular (also the “hot garbage pile on which I fucking sleep” while she’s sleeping in Ianthe’s bed is SO FUNNY). This is my favorite book and I feel extra in love with it when I'm watching this animatic.

Shout-out to this animatic for transforming me from being a casual Paramore fan to an intense Paramore fan. The amount of times I listened to Fences and thought about The Locked Tomb turned into me listening to Paramore on the daily.

I ADORE the way the artist uses the song itself. The lyrics being on screen and literally leading us through each scene gives the viewer a perfect view into why the song was chosen and what a genuinely fantastic fit it is for the story. Each shot feels like its own piece hanging in a museum that you’re walking through to get the full story of Gideon and Harrow’s life. I also really enjoy how the artist draws Gideon and Harrow, they made them specifically look so young (which they are, so maybe it would be better to say they look their age) and their emotions are so visible and explosive in a way that makes them contagious and gets me so into the moment. I spend every moment of my life feeling bad for Gideon and Harrow, but never more than when I see them like this.

I think this is the hardest I’ve laughed at a video in my entire life. The sense of timing is impeccable, the slow movement through every critique, the fact that the payoff is SO FAST and goes unremarked upon by Harrow kills me every time.

Kiss Me, Son of Jod - A Locked Tomb animatic/AMV by just some seal

Okay there are many, many things I love about this animatic, but my stand out favorite is the way it masterfully depicts John’s perspective through the dissonance between music and images.

Kiss Me, Son of God is the perfect song to use to depict John as a villain. He knows what he’s doing, he’s the evil spooky necromancer guy, this song is the essence of “Guys like me don’t make mistakes.”

HOWEVER the imagery tells a very different story. The way that John and his story are drawn feel much closer to how he actually feels/remembers these events. They’re a tragedy, they’re something that was forced upon him, he basically had no choice but to do this and he didn’t like it. Everything that has happened has been a heartbreaking shock that has made the strings feel a little bit more tragic in his “I’m an evil murderlord” anthem. The conflict between the sympathy and understanding he wants and his attempt to own his mistakes and who he’s become is extremely present in this animatic and I am OBSESSED. It is one of the best character studies I’ve ever seen.

It is also such a delight to get to see scenes from John's past brought to life AND to see scenes that I've seen depicted many times in the past depicted from his perspective, because that's very unique. Seeing Dios Apate Minor contrasted with his body literally being destroyed to frame every action as sympathetic even while the lyrics tell us that the actions being taken are very reasonable is SO COOL.

So Hades II has been dropping not so subtle hints that the gods are in the wrong and Melinoë may have to question the morality of the war she's been fighting for her entire life. It's present in the way the gods justify their treatment of mortals, it's present in the way Nemesis talks about justice and the fates of characters like Arachne, it's present in the way Chronos talks about his goals (though of course, it's easy to see how he could be lying about the new golden age, even though the history of the mythological golden age does hint at him being right).

But, to me, the number one sign that Melinoë may be on the wrong side of this conflict is the newest boss. I can't think of a single mythic figure who is more instantly sympathetic or more likely to be genuinely fighting for the wellbeing of mortals than Prometheus. I can't think of a single god, titan, or hero who cares more about humanity and its progress. I haven't studied up on Prometheus more than just reading the famous myth about him, but I have never really heard him discussed unsympathetically. I know this may be a biased perspective as a puny mortal, but my gut tells me to side with whoever Prometheus is throwing in with. But I guess we'll see if I'm putting too much stock in him as the plot continues to unfold.

Most people who have followed me—be they friends, mutuals, or enemies—did so because I did something I called "Ianthepocalypse," where I reblogged a LOT of pieces of fanart of Ianthe Tridentarius from The Locked Tomb. I found a whole lovely gaggle of people who are also not normal about this woman, and that fact delights me. Well, it's been a while, so we're doing another one!

I read the entire Locked Tomb series in fall of 2023. More specifically, I finished Gideon the Ninth at the end of September and began Harrow the Ninth at the beginning of October, which is where my Ianthe obsession began. To celebrate, whenever I start feeling the itch between now and the end of October 2nd, the Ianthepocalypse will begin and anything I've remembered to save and send to myself will get reblogged. It might be too much to do in a single day, which is why I'm giving myself a three day window. I've saved a pretty sizable legion of Ianthe posts, and posts mainly about other Locked Tomb characters that have enough Ianthe to imagine her making it about herself. I haven't remembered to save everything I've ever seen, but I've saved enough to unleash a pretty serious storm.

I'm just warning everyone now before the floodgates open. This is your last chance to run, hide, or put on your goggles and get ready for a swim.

Nona the Ninth Animatic - Sleeping in the Kitchen by Addamii (@addamii on Tumblr!)

THIS ONE IS SO CUTE. I love how focused it is on intimate moments and on Nona spending time with people she loves. I love how the plot has to literally break through because she doesn’t want it and she doesn’t want to remember. It makes the ending such a gut punch as we slide into what was always going to happen, and all we have left are the memories. Also the way that light and glitching effects are used in this one is so cool I am obsessed.
