Genial #Fridaythe13th has me thinking about superstitions and stories.
.
Those beliefs that events and actions will supernaturally cause a certain outcome. Like, breaking a mirror causes bad luck or Friday the 13th is an unlucky day.
.
We hear these throughout our childhood, to serve as a lesson or a warning.
.
In the Philippine culture, some of these are:
Siblings shouldn’t get married in the same year, or they will split their luck (oops, my husband and his sister totally did this).
You shouldn’t sweep at night because you might be sweeping away your riches.
Don’t sleep with wet hair or you will go crazy.
.
And for these superstitions, the people that believe in them will change their actions to alter their fate.
.
Similarly, we learn stories about ourselves or the world at a young age.
.
Stories like…
In order to deserve success, you need to work really hard to get it (and maybe even suffer a bit for it).
You are [insert family role here — the smart one, the fun one, the responsible one, etc] and you should only act that way.
You need to prove your worthiness through accomplishments.
.
And we are affected by them, because we believe in them.
.
But what if we chose not to believe in those stories? How would that impact us?
.
What stories have we held onto that don’t serve us anymore? What would happen if we let them go?
.
You get to write your own stories, your own beliefs, your own magic.
.
If you want support authoring your own stories, DM me. I’m here for you!
